Aythya americana

Morillon à tête rouge, Fuligule à tête rouge (French)
Pato cabeza roja (Spanish)

An aptly named diving duck, the Redhead can be easily identified by its bright red head and gray back. Many female Redheads make no nests of their own, but instead lay their eggs in the nests of other ducks.

Medium-sized duck.
Rounded head.
Bill blue with black tip.
Male with bright red head, gray back, and black chest and rear end.
Size: 42-54 cm (17-21 in)
Wingspan: 75-79 cm (30-31 in)
Weight: 630-1500 g (22.24-52.95 ounces)
Sex Differences:
Breeding male boldly patterned with red head and black ends;
female more subtly marked in grays and browns.

Male courtship call a catlike "meow."

Cool Facts:
The Redhead is known to lay eggs in the nests of other Redheads, at least 10 other duck species, and even nests of the American Bittern and Northern Harrier. Many parasiticallly laid eggs fail to hatch.

This photo was taken at the pond at an animal park.

Hello Manyee

A beautiful shot of this Redhead. The DOF and POV are very well done. The colours are rich and well saturated.Excellent focus and razor sharp details.Masterfully done.TFS

Hi Manyee. Beautiful shot. Well composed. I like the bird's reflection in the water although I wish you could have left a bit more of space at the bottom of the frame. Just my opinion though. The colours are lovely. The dark, mossy rocks in the back make the red stand out. Very sharp with excellent detail. Nice DOF too.

it is a beauty Manyee

Hi Manyee,
Nice shot of this beautiful redhead.
I like your reflection,colors,pose,note,focus,sharpness and framing.TFS

Nice shot ManYee. I have always liked these attractive ducks despite their lazy maternal instincts. It is another well exposed photo with good natural color and light.

Evelynn : )

Hello Manyee , perfect details and color saturation , I wish your composition of duck little upper of the frame , because reflection of duck is an important part of your photo , TFS.

Hi Manyee,

This is chocolate box stuff. Very well done. Although it is a close-up shot, somehow it is a moody picture, and I like it most for that. Technically the picture is very good; I can find nothing that bothers me if I look at the picture critically. One of your top images!

Hello Manyee,
Superb portrait of a Redhead duck with excellent detail and color, the yellow eye showing up very well. Pleasing dark contrasting BG and a nice reflection in the water.
Now I must look up the difference between it and a Canvasback!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

A lovely portrait of the Redhead, so similar to our Pochard A. ferina. A fine drake in full breeding plumage, with perfect lighting and complemented by a nice dark background. Nicely observed ;)
Regards, Nigel.
