The soft morning light helps bring out the gold plummage on these Eared Grebes heads. This was taken at Murry Lake, the vegetation behind the grebes is winter kill aquatic weeds and it is rotting so the air is a little pungent but the waterfowl and shorebirds seem to like it.
Eared Grebe
Podiceps nigricollis
General Description

By Andrew Slater

The Eared Grebe breeds across the prairie and parkland belts of southern and central Alberta. It winters on the west coast, and in the south west U.S.A. and in Mexico.

It arrives on the prairies in mid April and leaves by mid October. Between these months, it is one of the commonest birds on prairie sloughs.

The Eared Grebe feeds on all forms of aquatic life to be found in prairie and parkland sloughs. It both dabbles on the surface and makes shallow dives.

It is a colonial nester, in covering vegetation along the shores of lakes, ponds and marshes. The nests are anchored to submerged vegetation and mounds of mud, and consist of floating platforms of decaying vegetation.

Hi Rick,

Oh, those red eyes! This is just lovely.
I do like the early morning light. Wonderful colors and details and such a pretty scene.

Jane

The red eyes are so great , nice capture , Rick . We have a few of these birds on our farm , but it's hard to get close to them for the best shots . I'll have to wait for the grass and reeds to grow before I have a good place to hide . The colors and detail are very good . TFS , Kevin .

What fascinating eyes, Rick!
The metaphor 'burning embers' easily comes to mind.
These Eared Grebes are truly beautiful to look at with that attractive, dual toned plumage.
TFS and regards.

Hello Rick,
Very fine capture of a pair of Eared grebes, the red eyes shining. The wave in the water suggests that they put on a spurt when you directed your camera at them, but you managed a fine sharp, well lit and well composed shot.
TFS ansd best wishes, Ivan
