[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A male Dance Fly, Empis variegata, with prey (a Saw-fly).
Empidid flies are carnivorous, feeding on other insects, but they consume flower nectar as well.
The male presents a freshly killed prey to the female as a prelude to mating (presumably to avoid being considered themselves as fair game!) However the males of some species cheat, presenting a mere ball of silk or even saliva foam. Oh well....

Bonjour Philippe,
Toujours impressionnant de voir de si près ces prédateurs en macro. Compliments pour cette jolie et intéressante photo. Sur mon site j'ai la même bestiole mais en train de sucer une Scabieuse...

Hello Philippe,
What I like in TN the most is the possibility to watch many different creatures of the world, even if they are not rare or not very colourful. As for an entomologist this picture is very interesting. Rarely photographed group of flies, very nice pictures with good details and timing: predatory fly during the "dinner". It is not easy to take a good quality picture of so small insects (I believe this one was about 4-7mm), especially if they are so mobile!
My best congratulation because of very nice effect! :)
Best greetings,
Radomir
