Long, long time ago in China. July. Small village in Yunnan province...

11:00 am. One hour ago a young boy found a body of dead farmer on the field of rise. The nervous shock will end in a few minutes and than he will explain how and when he foud the body...

12:15. The steward of the village, old and very wise man just finished to talk with a boy. Now he knows all details about circumstance of finding a dead farmer. It is time to see the body and to start thinking who is a killer...

12:30. Field of rise. Inspection of the corpse. For the first view it is seen that man was killed suddenly, and the finishing stroke was done using a blund tool. A cracked cranium clearly suggests that the farmer had no chance...

13:00. Again in the village. The weather is really bad, dark clouds on the air, soon it will be raining. But still it is hot. The steward knows that he has no time. He must think fast to catch the murderer. Quick decision: all villagers have to come together with their field tools!

As soon as they come, the steward orders to put all their tools on the ground. Every farmer has to take place next to his equipment. After a 10-15 minutes everything is clear! Small, flying "assistants" of the steward show the killer! The murderer is known and the justice wins!

How it was possible???

Well, it is really easy to explain. The "flying assistants" are the flies from Muscidae and Tachinidae families. They just detected the rest of the killed farmer's blood on the hoe of one of villagers, and then they were flying above it. Really typical behaviour for fly scavergers...Bad luck for the killer...

The steward did not known that after almost 2000 years entomologists will note his case as the first incident in the forensic entomology. Since that moment insects will be used as very important "confederates" of justice. Many times they will find out the true, they show killers or allow to say who is not guilty...

Among them they are be many small heroes, including flies (Muscidae, Tachinidae, Calliphoridae, Empididae), beetles (Silphidae, Dermestidae, Cleridae, Tenebrionidae), or moths (Tineidae). Some of them will say who killed, some when, other how... They will explain if the body was removed from an "original place", or what kind of weather conditions was in the day of tragedy...

And here on the photo is just one of a "normal flies" or - if you like - "the last just", member of Tachinidae family :>

PS. The flower: Carlina acaulis

Hi Radek and sorry for the delay
I've been out on some short fieldtrips as part of my Master degree and i had very few time for TN these past few days...but i came back with something you might like :) (i'll send you an e-mail soon).

This is another very beautiful macro shot from you and also a very interesting note to complete it.
The Composition created here is exceptional, in my opinion, having that splendid circle as a "BG" for this nice fly.
The details on the subject are fantastic again and the natural colors are very beautiful, too.

Bravo and TFS

It is the placement of the fly within the "circle" that makes this composition a work of art, Radomir.
In its isolated identity, a fly is seen as a vile creature, best to be snuffed out as quickly as possible.
And look at the way you have proved its immense usefulness in forensic science in your note!
Thanks for sharing this charming composition.

This is very interesting to me. I love the colors of the fly, especially the eyes, tone so well with the rest of the image. It is a really nice post. Thanks for taking the time to include the note. In all, it is perfect addition to the TN gallery.

Evelynn : )

Radomir, it sounds very much like an episode of CSI China-S-I!

Joking aside, a great story reminding us of some of the benifits of flies. Excellent macro, celar and crisp. Tfs Jay

Hi Radomir ,

Wow, there is perfect sharpness on this fly. And your note is very interesting, hats of for that!

Apart from that this is a very artistic composition.

Hello Radomir,

A very good macro of the trivial fly! I also like the facts you put in the note! It's unbelievable how far forensic science got!

The composition is outstanding! I especially like your POV and the way you used the round flower as an element of your composition! The decreasing of sharpness in the background added a third dimention to your picture! Very well done!

Very good and natural colors! I noticed that the colors of the fly's eyes closely match the colors of the flower. More than this, yellow and lila are complimentary colors that always make a nice combination!

Excellent contrast in the subject! It makes the fly stand out from the rest! Complimentary colors also make a good contrast!

You exposed the picture very good to show the fly! Every detail in the fly's body is perfectly rendered. Maybe some areas in the petals are a little bit overexposed but this is acceptable. You made a good choice to sacrifice them in order to get a right exposure in the fly. Very well done!

Excellent focus on the fly! It shows razor sharp details and the well controlled DOF blurred the background to give some depth!

Overall, a great posting of a "normal fly" with very interesting notes! Well seen and brilliantly captured! Thanks for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,

Hola Radomir.
Una maravilla de macro. Los colores suaves están perfectos.
Bonitos contrastes y estupenda presentación.
Un cordial saludo. JL.

Hello Radomir,
Excellent image of this fly. Yes, I think they use a lot of insects in forensics, they tell a lot of stories. Your image is of very good quality with a great POV.

Hi Radomir,
How could I miss this super shot! This beautiful and matching environment makes even the fly look attractive!! I love the colours in this composition and sharpness is excellent. Vey fine composition - I like the flower and wonder what it is?
TFS and all the best, Ulla

What a great presentation this is Radomir! I really enjoyed reading your notes as I'm a fan of some TV's shows that present us real murder investigating stories where they often use insects as “witness” :) This is a very nice macro with excellent details and original composition. Well done and TFS,

Magnifique photo ... belle compo ... A+

Hi Radomir.
Choice of the subject for shooting is great. Amazing pictured scene. Great DOF, unusual and nice colour palette. Great sharpness of the fly and flower. Superb composition. So creative and skillfully done work. Bravo and TFS.

Joli support pour une charmante mouche !
Bonne journée.

Hi Radomir,
It's a wonderful and rare image at the same time. I like the symmetry and pale colours of the flower and the good sharpness and dtails in the fly. Great job!!

Witam, Radomirze!
Może to jest i zwykła mucha, ale tak niezwykle pokazana i w tak niecodziennym otoczeniu, że z przyjemnością się ją ogląda jak małe dzieło sztuki. Wspaniałe!

Excellent clearness and impressing composition, the geometrical distribution of the image, due to the perfect hight of POV is lovely.
Congratulations, MF.
