During one of my recent trips, i stumbled upon this little fellow here, who was kind enough not to fly away instantly and give me enough time for a few decent shots.

After i came back home, i took a closer look and tried to identify the species. Comparing it to all sorts of other species, i think the ID here is the Large Copper - Lycaena dispar. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

After that, i searched the net for some info about it and found this:

The Large Copper (Lycaena dispar) is a butterfly in the family Lycaenidae. The British race of this butterfly (dispar) has been extinct for over 150 years (since 1864). Most of our knowledge of its life cycle and ecology comes from studies of the similar race (batavus) found in The Netherlands. The species can be identified by the silvery hindwing undersides, from the large specimens of the related, more common, drier habitat species Lycaena virgaureae and Lycaena hippothoe.

This is one of the butterfly species classified as a priority for protection and re-introduction in the UK under its national Biodiversity Action Plan. The species has been in severe decline in Britain due to the great reduction of fen habitat due to expansion of the human population. In the rest of the Western Europe, the draining of wetlands and building and agricultural activity on shallow riverbanks has caused a strong decline. In Eastern Europe, undeveloped riverbanks and deltas are a habitat for the species, though even there it is somewhat threatened due increasing human influence on these areas.

There have been several reintroduction attempts to sites in both Britain and Ireland, but these have all ultimately failed. Research is now being conducted to see whether a further attempt is worthwhile in more extensive habitats available in the Norfolk Broads.

HI Horia!
I didn't know either, great shot, I saw lots of them lately and took photos, they are very teritorial always on the same place so it's easy to find them.Great shot and note!

Hi Horia
Nice shot of this colorful butterfly with great details. I don't know so much about butterfly's but you did nice camerawork :)

Hello Horia!
Very beautiful picture! Lovely colours with great DOF and POV which allow to see the very characterictic details of this species.
Unfortunatelly I have to agree with you about the species status. Also in Poland it is protected by the law (as a result of loosing natural habitats).
TFs and best greetings,

Ps. Thanks for the e-mail! These pictures were really nice! :)

Hello Horia,
This is an impressive capture of the Large Copper. Excellent sharpness, DOF, composition and POV and the OOF BG helps to allow it dominate the image.
I envy you seeing this rarity that I have never had the priviledge to see myself.
So thanks for sharing this one,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Horia,
The color of this Large Copper is very eye catching. Lovely pov and composition. The blurred background gives depth to this picture. Very well done.

I love the photo and I guess you were very lucky to find him..and we are lucky to see him here too! Its a beautiful photo, lets hope hes got some family close by! TFS

Thanks for your comments on my photo " Ornithoptera chimaera chimaera (26) " :o)

Well how special is that!!! Not only did you get a great photo but of a special subject! You must have a very well trained eye and be very patient. Nice work

Evelynn : )

What a beautiful Large Copper, Horia!

The butterfly obliged you with a nice open-wing stance and you went on to do perfect justice to it. It is truly a great capture. I love the colour of its wings.

The concerns about the threats to numerous species of wild life seems to be a harsh reality we have to learn to live with with a sense of despondency, of course.

Thanks and best regards.

Hi Horia,

A superb shot of the lovely Butterfly, the composition is superb with a fine pose and a great POV, very good detail and excellent DOF, the colours are nice and vivid. What a shame about the failed attempts at re-introduction, maybe it will work in the Norfolk Broads.

Hi Horia.
You managed to create a pleasant shot of this cute butterfly and impressive leaves. I like nice colour palette of the shot: beautiful combination of bright orange, moderate green and dumped up colours of the BG. Sharpness and details of the butterfly are great as always for your pictures. Soft light is very impressive and suits for pictured scene very well. Superb refined work. My compliments and TFS.

Salut Horia,

Imi place si modul in care ai distribuit spatiul liber in jurul fluturelui, lasandu-i suficient loc sa respire.

Ai surprins niste culori cum numai in lumea fluturilor poti gasi! Oranjul asta iese foarte bine in evidenta si face ca poza sa fie mai placuta!

Contrastul in prim plan este excelent!

Numai bine,

Hello Horia,
It is so great when a butterfly is kind and patient for few shots ;-) And this Copper is lovely. You chose good settings on the S2 and the result is great. Composition, colors, exposure, sharpness and DOF are super.
Congratulations and TFS.

Beautiful pic of this rare guy.
The butterfly is lovely. The orange at the tip of the antennas is a plus.
Green is complementary color of orange. So the background enhances the colors of the butterflie at its most.
Detailed and wel composed.

Hi Horia,
It is a pity that humans can destroy nature that fast and have such a hard time to repair it again. But luckely this little b'fly still has other places where it still can life and survive. You managed to get another wonderful photo with great details and colors.

I am sorry to hear that you trip to the US has been delayed. I know how much you were looking forward to it. I do hope it will not be delayed for a very long time.

Hello Horia,
no doubt it is a male of L. dispar, presenting its beauty,
well captured in perfect pose.
Fortunately, we do see this pretty species quite frequently in the region of southeastern Europe both of us have in common, even close to the city of Vienna, as long as we keep an eye on the maintenance of some undisturbed habitat of wet meadows. Thank you!
