Violet Turaco (Musophaga violacea)

A 51cm bird with unusually silky plumage. Main body and tail colour is purple, with red on top of head, red on lower edges of wings (male only), and a white horizontal stripe under the yellow eye surround. No eyelashes. Heavy bill is yellow with orange at the tip and has a horny plate extending from the upper mandible to the forehead. The red in the plumage is produced by a copper-based pigment called turacin, also peculiar to turacos. While violet turacos magnificent shimmering plumage does contain the green turaco pigments, these are mostly covered by dark melanins.

They are found in West Africa from Gambia and Senegal east to Cameroon. They prefer open woodland, riverside forest, humid forest edge. They live in lower lying territories and only seldom venture above altitudes of 1000 meters. These birds eat fruit, especially figs. They also like some snails and insects.

This is a shy perching birds which prefer to stay out of sight in the dense canopy of tall trees where they run along the branches searching for fruits. More social than some turacos, they often travel in flocks of ten or twelve birds. Nests are shallow, built of twigs in densely foliated trees and the clutch usually consists of two nearly spherical white eggs. Incubation takes 21-24 days. The nestling period is about four weeks and it takes the young almost a year to develop full coloration. The bird's main call is a long series of deep, gargling "cou-cou-vhou" notes that run into each other, producing a pulsing roar when two birds call in a slightly asynchronous duet.

* Nestlings have a vestigial but functional claw on each wing joint and can use it to scramble around the nest and even out of it, before they fledge.
* The turacos fourth toe can rotate forward, uniquely.

They are not listed as endangered.

Bella ave y excelentemente exhibida Gerhard.
El colorido y nitidez de las plumas es expectacular.
Tal vez el fondo no era el más adecuado, pero lo has resuelto perfectamente.

Beautiful bird and excellently exhibited Gerhard.
Colorful and the clearness of the pens is to expectacular.
Perhaps the bottom was not most suitable, but you have solved it perfectly.

Very good shot, Gerhard - ideal posing by the bird to pretty much fill the frame diagonally. And what a colorful and original chap he is. Good definition in the plumage, beautiful colors, and nice DOF. Well done.
