Common Green Darner (Anax junius)

The Green Darner's voracious appetite for mosquitos and other flying insects has earned it the nickname "Mosquito Hawk". Darners were named such because of their resemblance to a darning needle. In folk lore it was believed that they would sew peoples eyes shut and parents would threaten their children with a visit from the Green Darner. Also known as "snake doctor" because it was believed that they guarded the entrance to snake's dens. The Green Darner is an agressive feeder. When disturbed, it will attack bees and wasps and it is documented of one once attacking a Hummingbird. The Green Darner can be seen in swarms of sometimes one million or more migrating south during the Fall. The ones seen returning north in the Spring are the children.

Hi Jim,
you have captured a beautiful dragonfly.
The colours is nice but the contrast is very high and the picture is a bit oversharped.
Well done.

Great vivid colors! That green is gorgeous! Good composition - but all your dragonflies are well composed.
