[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Shining Sunbeam
Aglaeactis cupripennis

Photographed in our birding tour to Yanacocha Reserve in the high montane cloud forest on Volcan Pichincha at around 3500mt. It’s not a very good photo because of the branches and trees all over between me and my model, there was no other place I can move and change my POV. This fellow gave me a hard time, he was more shy compared to other hummungbirds flying all around us, he prefered to stay away on a branch and gave a shy pose. Every time I pressed the shutter button- I thought he was standing still, he was afraid from the shutter noise of my Canon EOS 20D, and he shaked, check the workshop version; all the other photos I have captured he was doing the same, I couldn’t even see him move at all- I thought he was standing still :o)). This was the only stable and motion blurless photo I could take of him.

The diversity of hummingbird species in the Andes is unsurpassed. There are so many photographs of different hummungbird species from this trip that are not yet presented in Trek Nature , but I’m trying not to upload the ones that have feeders in the photo (at least for now :o), as I don’t like the appearance of the feeders.

Class AVES
Species Authority (Bourcier, 1843)

Justification: This species has a large range, with an estimated global extent of occurrence of 280,000 km2. The global population size has not been quantified, but it is believed to be large as the species is described as 'common' in at least parts of its range (Stotz et al. 1996). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e., declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Major Habitat/s
Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Montane

Hi Selen,

You did really well under the conditions. The 20D shutter noise can be a problem. I still like the picture. Great note. TFS.

Hi Selen

Interesting note - you have done far better with humming birds than I have!! They are very difficult and under forest conditions it is even more difficult.

Hi Selen,
Very aesthetic image, nicely composed.
Technically also a great shot.

Hola Selen, díficil puntop de vista del ave. Fotografiada con mucha dificultad. Me gusta la mirada que has capatado y el workshop. Un saludo y TFS.

Hello Selen,
Photographing birds in the rain forest is a real struggle and I understand your problem!
Even so you managed to get the head of this pretty bird in focus and one gets a very good impression of the pretty plumage. I like its pose and the composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Selen

Even if this was taken through plenty of vegetation, the details and superb silhouette of this sunbeam really looks great here.
The colors are charming and the nice flash work gave you an excellent catchlight here in its eye.
The WS photo is very funny, too :))

Bravo and TFS

Hi Selen,
A very beautiful photo, where the spy like composition, due to the OOF leaves make a wonderful framing. I am sure you had a hard time focussing. But you nailed it, the photo is razor sharp. Great work on the composition and exposure. That little twinkle in the eye is magnificent.

Merhaba Selen,

Merhaba Selen,
This is a lovely image with the shining eye. The out of focus parts give a dreamy feeling. Excellent job with the flash exposure.
