American Oystercatcher
Haematopus palliatus

An American Oystercatcher on lava rocks in Egas Port of Santiago Island. Egas Port has a long lava shoreline where eroded rock formations house an excellent variety of wildlife. And for me the black lava provided an excellent bacground.

American Oystercatcher is a heavily built shorebird. Underparts white, and breast, head, wings and back black. A white wing patch and rump are visible in flight. Striking, long, powerful red bill, laterally flattened to help open bivalves. Eyes yellow with a red ring around them. Feet and legs flesh coloured. The call is a shrill “kle-e-ep”. Nesting takes place between october and march. The chicks leave the nest immediately on hatching.

Oystercatchers are closely tied to coastal habitats. They nest on beaches on coastal islands and feed on marine invertebrates. The large, heavy beak is used to pry open bivalve molluscs. (wikipedia)

Hi Selen,
Difficult fellows to capture due to the overall black colouration plus they always busy IME...
In addition you have the dark background as well...
Nevertheless you managed to get a decent and interesting shot.

Hi Selen,
This is an interesting capture of the Oystercatcher.
Obviously it wasn't too near a nest, otherwise it would be coming straight at you.
You've got good DOF here considering the POV.
You did a good job.
We have 2 species here, pied and variable.
I have posted one previously and will post another soon.
Cheers,and thanks for sharing.
