[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
De torenvalk (Falco tinnunculus) is een vogel uit de familie van valken (Falconidae).
Een volwassen exemplaar is 30 tot 35 centimeter groot. Ze komen voor op allerlei soorten plaatsen, ook in steden. De dieren zijn vaak te zien langs autowegen. Ze kijken vanuit de lucht naar beneden op zoek naar een prooi. Als ze deze hebben gevonden, duiken ze erop af. Het voedsel bestaat voornamelijk uit kleine zoogdieren en insecten, bijvoorbeeld muizen en kevers. Hierom bouwen ze hun nest dan ook op een plaats waar ze zicht hebben op een open ruimte waar ze kunnen speuren naar voedsel.
Het mannetje heeft een grijsblauwe kop en nek, een roodbruine rug en vleugels met donkere vlekken. De staart is blauwachtig grijs en heeft een zwarte eindband. Het vrouwtje is identiek aan het mannetje, maar heeft een bruine kop en nek, dwarsbandjes op de rug en vleugels en een bruine staart.
Het gehele jaar komen torenvalken in een groot deel van Europa voor, waaronder Nederland en België. In Scandinavië en Noord-Rusland zijn de dieren alleen in de zomer aan te treffen.

The Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is a bird of prey species belonging to the kestrel group of the falcon family Falconidae. It is also known as the European Kestrel, Eurasian Kestrel, or Old World Kestrel. In Britain, where no other brown falcon occurs, it is generally just called "the Kestrel.
This species occurs over a large range. It is widespread in Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as occasionally reaching the east coast of North America. The Common Kestrel is small compared with other birds of prey, but larger than most songbirds. Kestrels have long wings as well as a distinctive long tail like the other Falco species. This bird's plumage is mainly brown with dark spots. Unlike most hawks they display sexual colour dimorphism with the male having a blue-grey head and tail. The tail is brown with black bars in females, and has a black tip with a narrow white rim in both sexes. All Common Kestrels sexes have a prominent black malar stripe like their closest relatives.

Very nice portrait of this Kestrel! Well managed exposure, very natural colors, and outtanding details. Background is excellent and compliments the colors of your subject.

Hallo Paula,
Prachtige foto van deze torenvalk. Mooi scherp met schitterende details. Goede dieptewerking en achtergrond. Eigenlijk had hij zijn kop nog ietsje naar rechts moeten draaien. Maar zoiets hebben we gelukkig niet voor het zeggen.
