A halo is a ring of light that surrounds an object.

Halos, also known as icebows, are optical phenomena that appear near or around the Sun or Moon, and sometimes near other strong light sources such as street lights. There are many types of optical halos, but they are mostly caused by ice crystals in cold cirrus clouds located high (510 km, or 36 miles) in the upper troposphere. The particular shape and orientation of the crystals is responsible for the type of halo observed. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and may split up into colors because of dispersion, similarly to the rainbow.

Sometimes in very cold weather optical halos are formed by crystals close to ground level, called diamond dust. The crystals behave like jewels, refracting and reflecting sunlight between their faces, sending shafts of light in particular directions.

Atmospheric phenomena such as halos were used as an empirical means of weather forecasting before meteorology was developed.

Hi Elroyie,
What a stunning photo. Using the halo from the sun to frame the tree is magnificent. Great work on keeping details and color in the photo while shooting into the sun. The silhoutte of the tree and the sky are really beautiful. I need to fav this one.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Elroyie,

Are you sure you wanted to name it 'Holly Tree' or did you possibly mean'Holy Tree' which would be of a more spiritual meaning which would suit this incredible shot perfectly. Very clever. Very nice Dude! :)

Hello Elroyie

What a fantastic picture - and what a perfect title to go with it. The halo effect is stunning and the almost b/w sure enhance it. A technically perfect shot - I would say second to none. Very clever handling of the light. Excellent pov with the moon in perfect position. Great composition with the tree just a little out of centre.

You did a great job on this shot and thank you very much for sharing this experience.
