Vagrant Emperor Dragonfly
Hemianax ephippiger

Vagrant Emperor is a large sized dragonfly (measuring nearly 3 inches in this particular case) and belongs to the family Aeshnidae, commonly known as Hawker Dragonflies.

This male of the species was so big I had to draw back considerably to get the entire insect within the frame. Getting close with the minimum distance permissible by 105mm macro gave me very sharp images of its head and thorax and part of the wings.
Here is one of those close-up shots.

About this dragonfly, there is one confirmed Irish record in Dublin in 1913. The dragonfly is basically of a dispersive species that occasionally reaches northern Europe from resident populations around the Mediterranean.
That this is a male of the species is evident from the patch of bright blue colour between the thorax and the abdomen.

KEY IDENTIFICATION FEATURES

The insect is mostly pale brown in colour. The Segment 2 (between thorax and abdomen) on the males is bright blue in colour but duller violet in the case of females. The eyes are normally brown.
One feature that struck me as unusual in the specimen I photographed is the glossy patch of silver grey on the lower abdomen just underneath the blue one on the upper.
The note is based on the information available on the site given below:
http://www.habitas.org.uk/dragonflyireland/5631.htm

For those who missed looking at my first posting of this insect, let me tell them that I shot it indoors at night by ‘positioning’ it on the synthetic creepers and plants. So don’t be surprised if the yellow flowery perch looks artificial because it is artificial.

TFS and regards to all.

Hi Mr. Ram,
Good capture tough low light condition. What is that web like white spot on the eye? Is it the flash or some other light source? POV is excellent. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Ram,
Interesting to see a macro of this beautiful "Blue-spot" dragonfly. Excellent sharpness and colours which show up against the dark background. I like the matching colour of the cloth flower!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Ram,
That is a big one, causing a new sort of problem to macro photography!
Use of flash is successful, bringing out good colours and details...
Subject is well framed in a dynamic composition!
Greetings,

Well then very good position and truthfully the flower weave adds an intriguing touch. Yellow the color of the day with a spot of blue for nice primary colour. Wonderful. Well noted, but I would expect nothing less from the master of notations.

Hi Ram

An admission - I do not really like insects (my house backs onto a river and I get far too many of them in the house)! This is a beautiful posting. The light, the colour and the focus are outstanding - you may be able to change my mind!!

Hi Ram,

Wonderful notes to go with this sensational macro. It's so up-close that we see every detail. Beautiful colors - I love the splashes of blue and silver. I'm wondering - since there is no scent, is it the yellow of the artificial flower that attracts him?

bonjour ram
le coup flash est un peu trop visible mais j'aime le fait que cette libellule est posée sur une fleur artificielle, elle n'est pas pret de voir une proie s'y poser.
