GREAT SAPPHIREWING (male)
Pterophanes cyanopterus

Family: TROCHILIDAE (Hummingbirds)
Genus: Pterophanes

Photographed in Yanacocha Reserve in the high montane cloud forest on Volcan Pichincha, west slope of the Andes at around 3500mt.

The blurred one in the back is a male Buff-winged starfrontlet.

With the exception of insects, hummingbirds while in flight have the highest metabolism of all animals, a necessity in order to support the rapid beating of their wings. Their heart rate can reach as high as 1,260 beats per minute.

Besides their small size and speed, trying to capture them in-flight in such a poor light in the Cloud forest was another issue. Most of the times the camera couldn't compete with their fast speed in poor light, and couldn't zoom at all. Having forgotten a small but an important part of my tripod in Turkey, I couldn't use my tripod, I had to try this with a monopod. I tried so many different manual settings with our without the poor built-in flash of Canon EOS 20D. This one was taken without flash with 1/1250 seconds at ISO 1600, that's why it's noisy :o)

*Hummingbird wings are driven by the most powerful muscles per unit mass of all vertebrates. The wings of this high-altitude species are unique for their iridescent blue feathers and their size: Thin Andean air requires larger wings and fuller strokes.

Hi Selen,
Two for the price of one. This is really great. You really got the wings almost frozen in mid air, and that with such a high speed rate. Very impressive. A wonderful moment captured, with great details and colors. The fact that you got another one blurred in the BG is amazing.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Selen

Just logged on - and there was your posting. Very nice composition - I like the blurred hummingbird in the bottom left of the frame. The positioning of the bird is really good and the 'frozen' wing is great.

James

Hi Selen.
Wow, colours are beautiful on this hummingbird. DOF great, he really stands out and you have froze the moment perfectly, slightly soft but all the detail is there.
Wonderful

Hello Selen,
Great shot vivid colors very sharp with good composition, you capture a perfect time is\even an other one in the BG well done regards/Lawhill

Hi Selen,
Outstanding action shot of the flying/hovering Hummingbird!
Brilliant colours, very good composition. Nice BG with second bird.
Congratulations!

Hi Selen,
Another great capture for you and one shot with two birds, very nice pose and colour. but test with the Neat Image, to eliminate the excess of noise.
Cheers
Jorge

Hello Selen,
This is not an easy shot to achieve and you did great. Those birds are really amazing by their size and colors. The other bird in BG creates a beautiful effect and I'm amazed that you used ISO 1600 as I don't think that it is that noisy. I love this movement you captured. This is very nice. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Selen,
a very nice pictue with lovley colours and fine details for an
in-flight shot. Maybe it's a bit tight above since it's flying
up to, otherwise it's very good.
Well done.

Merhaba Selen, bence çok güzel olmuş tebrikler

hi selen,
very nice shot , you have captured a very difficuly shot with perfection, nice pov, lovely colours, well composed shot,
tfs & regards

Hello Selen,
An incredible hummingbird, the scientific name fits well, cyanopterus or blue wings in english. Very good image, despite bad light conditions. Only can point that noise reduction is not complete in a slim line around the bird; but's still a nice and good document.

Hernán

Hello Selen,
Another wonderful Hummingbird from you! Very well-timed and excellent quality as usual. Nice soft background too. I expect there must have been a feeder that they were after.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hello Selen,
Wonderful shot of this 'frozen' hummingbird. Very sharp and beautiful colours. The BG with the other hummingbird is amazing. I like the composition. A bit noisy around the bird.

Hi Selene,

Fabulous shot of the beautiful Hummingbird, its a superbly composed shot with a fabulous in-flight pose and I love its little feet all tucked up infront, very good detail and excellent colours too.

TFS Hilary :o)

Prety good result from ISO 1600, I don't think you should be dissapointed at all.

I think I would have been tempted to clone-out the backound bird its a bit distracting from the main image.

Gorgeous bird, well frozen in flight with good sharpness and DOF.

Considering the conditions, I think this is an excellent result.

Selen, How you manage to take such a beautiful and lovely shot. I tried many times. Is the patience is the key? I like its colors and the wings. It looks like para trooper. Ganesh

Regardless - this surely is one of the better Humming Bird shots.
Well done and well worth the effort. And the noise is less than to be expected from ISO 1600. Bravo!

Beautiful colours and action, Selen!

Hello Selen, a beautfiul catch of a beautiful little bird. Great focus and sharpness to catch it in flight, especially if the light was not good. Great colours and I love the pov. Nice and sharp.

I can see where this shot would have been a challenge. You did well to stop the action. The colors are nicely saturated and the background interesting.

merhaba Selen Hanım,
harika, mükemmel renkler. hareket, çekim, bakış açısı ve kontrast çok güzel. verdiğiniz bilgiler de çok güzel. elinize sağlık, teşekkürler ve selamlar. Ahmet

I don't know whether it is correlated with the title but for sure to take the picture of this fast moving hummingbird is absolutely a big challenge and you could manage it very well. Really punctual timing, the bird looks like freezing but in the same time the noisy somehow create a great movement effect, really great shot and thanks for share the informative notes

Hi Selen, Excellent capture of this very special bird on the wing. The 1,250 sec exposure time is remarkable and has stopped the wings well. Good work. Murray.

Hi Selen,
Just marking this shot and will come back later with a proper critique. Sorry my friend, tied up with an important assignment.
Regards.

Nice shot. It wud have been better if it were little more sharp.... but shooting flying birds is always tough,.. and shooting such hummingbirds in low light is tougher. Good work :)
