Malachite Kingfisher
Alcedo cristata

Also known as: Afr: Kuifkopvisvanger, Ger: Malachiteisvogel, Fre: Martin-pêcheur huppé

Scientific Explained: alcedo: Latin, a kingfisher. cristata/cristatus: Latin, crested.

They are small in size and has an above bright deep blue colour and is greener on crown. Its crest is not usually raised. They utter a high-pitched chippering song. Can be found in Africa south of the Sahara, Madagascar and adjacent islands; in South Africa absent from much of dry western regions; otherwise widespread.

They frequent lakes, dams, streams, rivers, estuaries, irrigations canals, sewage ponds, with marginal vegetation. Usually solitary birds that perches low over water on a branch or stem and dive for its prey. Often bobs head and body when still-hunting from perch. When disturbed, flies straight and low, disappearing around bend in watercourse or shoreline. They feed on fish, insects, tadpoles, frogs, crustaceans.

Breeding season is from August to February. The nest is a tunnel (30-90 cm long) in a river bank. The chamber lined with regurgitated fish bones and arthropod exoskeletons.

This critter has evaded me for too long now. I was lucky to get this shot off so close. I hope you like it.

Very nice portrait of this beautiful bird. Great colours, pose, compostion and very good details.
Great work, my friend

I continue to be fascinated by their plumage and beak colour. So very different to the King Fisher we have in New Zealand. Awesome work Gerhard. Nice and close with exceptional detail, DoF and sharpness. Just beautiful. TFS.

Superbe photo Gerhard !
Bien cadré, de belles couleurs et un bel oiseau.

Oh yes, Gerhard, this little critter is a real jewel. It's colors are wonderful, specially on the chest where the shades are very delicate. Beautiful pose too. I can imagine what the crest can look like!

Wonderful shot!
Very good composition, with vibrant colours and great sharpness.
It's always a pleausre to see your work.

Congratulations on capturing him at last! It's an excellent shot IMO. Composition is perfect, and the backgound is nicely in bokeh. I think I might be tempted to sharpen him a little more, and I think a little more DOF might have helped with the stem - but obviously you were close the limit with 1/125 anyway. Useful note as always. Brilliant capture :-D

P.S. You can add another common name to the list, I'd call him an "arrrgggghhh, where'd he go" ;)

Hi Gerhard
Jou bontrokkie het my getrek, maar ek weet hoe jy begeer het om hierdie een te nail! Mooi Man. Hoop die naweek was goed. Very nice picture of this small, flying jewel!
Maar HOEKOM sou hy kakiebos uitsoek?

Excellent catch, great composition and very good colours, the picture seems to be a little bit soft, did you use any noise reduction software?

Good capture, but I feel that the bird is not sharp though and the branch behind the birds back is a little distracting. This guy wears a great technicolour coat

I'm running a thread in forums, the whites are cooked. Not your fault. A digital flaw.
