Butler's Spotted Pierrot
Tarucus calinara Butler

A small blue butterfly with a wingspan of 18-23 mm. The sexes are very different on the upper side but very similar below.

The upper side of male is a uniform metallic blue with a hint of purple and is bounded along the outer margins by a fine black border. The upper side is semi-transparent and the markings of the under side show through when viewed from above.

In the female, the blue is restricted to the basal part of the wings. The apical area of the forewing has a checkerboard appearance with black and white markings. The undersides of both sexes are marked by black streaks and stripes that are uniformly distributed over the entire wing.

Similar species

The Striped Pierrot. The second row of small black lines from the outer margin of both wings are connected to each other and form a continuous line. The corresponding row in the Butler's Spotted Pierrot is a series of discrete black markings (image above).

Status, distribution and habitat

It is found all year round but is scarce and local. It is usually encountered in and around the thorny bushes of Ziziphus on the coastal dunes.

It flies fast and and stays atop or around thorny shrub but does not fly too far from the larval food plant. It often settles at the tip of dead twigs, and the males often give chase to passing butterflies

Hello Pankaj

An excellent close up of this small butterfly. The details and colours are wonderful, and the little hairstreaks are in perfect detail. The textures come through nicely. The illumination is well handled and the colour saturation is very good. The pose is a classic and the way you have cropped and composed is beautiful. It is a wonderful documentation shot ,artistically done.Terrific camera work.BTW I know the small ones are much harder to photograph then larger butterflies from experience.Well done.TFS

Great detail on very small butterfly. The focus is excellent and you show very nice texture on the wings. Nice colors also. The exposure is very good considering your butterfly chose a bright white flower in fun sun. The flower is beautiful with perfect exposure.

Pankaj, there seems to be some noise on the bg, but that's a minor nit.

Great pov, composition and colors.

I enjoy saturation too.

Namaste Pankaj,
this arrangement is so wonderful, I like the tiny butterfly with the tails on that white fluffy flower, fantastic shot, thanks and greetings

bonjour pankaj
a mon humble avis la fleur blanche est trop voyante pour ce l'on se fixe sur le papillon même,mais dans l'ensemble c'est assez reussi avec un beau BG flou et coloré.
