[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi everyone.
Has been a week since my last upload.
I'm sure I did miss a lot of great images overhere and will try to catch up shortly.

Have been and still are very busy lately with another photographic hobby of mine wich is shooting sports and planes.
Did shoot over 4000 images over the past two weeks and it does take a lot of time to archieve them properly :)

This time I show you an antique :) image and at the same time my first macro upload on TN.

The shot of this Attacus atlas moth, wich normally you can find on a leaf, but in this case is on a Heliconia flower, has been taken in captive conditions at the Emmen Zoo in the Province of Drenthe in the Netherlands.
Taken in June 1996 just after I bought my first Nikon F5 camera. and did want to try out things with that camera.

The BG is dark and therefore does'nt look as natural as it should be.
Nowedays I would do things different, but I did like to do butterfly shots this way than.

It is a dark BG because I did use a fast (1/250) shutter time while using flash and there was'nt much in the BG except for some smaller leaf wich came out underexposed anyway and therefore I did darken the BG totally after because the under exposed leaf were more distracting than adding something to the image.

The faster the shutter time you use taking macro images the darker, more underexposed the BG will be because the reflecting light of the flash unit does not get time to come back in to the lens and therefore can't lighten the film used.

Thanks in advance for looking at and comments are more than welcome.

Kindest regards, Harry

hi hary,
you have captured a fine specimen of atlas moth, the moth looks great, i would love to see this moth some day, the shot is full of vivid colours, the dark bg adds to the look of the shot, well composed shot, sharp imgage with good details,
well done,
tfs & regards

Hi Harry,
Beautiful shot. Colours are brilliant here. Dark BG is OK. I like this.
Perfect composition and very useful note.

Hi Harry
Great image, the combination of the moth and the flower is just perfect with a black BG. Well done! The main subject is in the center and in this case this is working very well, so perfect compo too.
Colours are brilliant as well as sharpness.
But I think you should abandon the theory that light does not get time to come back in to the lens, given that the speed of light is 299 792 458 m / s so almost 75.000 km in a 1/250 second. Probably your BG was a bit closer ;-)

Like a silk carpet, nice shot, TFS.

Hello Harry

Hello Harry,

Excellent work.
PS - 4000 in two weeks..is that all ;}

Hi Harry,
Outstanding shot with brilliant colours and immaculate sharpness. Excellent POV and DOF here with superb use of flash lighting. The patterns and textures on its wings are fabulous as is the flower. The dark BG highlights the subjects well. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Wow Harry,
This is an excellent image of this superb looking Moth. For a first macro image you have shown us you have set your own standard pretty high. The quality is fabulous, such wonderful detail. The Moth and the flower look wonderful against the black background. I will be looking forward to more of you macro shots.

Hello Harry,
It is an interesting and very colorful image. Looks almost like a painting with such vivid colors against black background. Very fine details. It would be interesting to see the flower cloned out and nothing but moth against black background. The note was very helpful explanation of using flash with macro. (I will trade you a green anole for an attacus atlas moth).
Best Wishes!

Amazing colors - wow! The reds and oranges and greens...beautiful!!!!
Great shot - artistically composed. Good stuff!

Hi Harry,
WOW the Colours are outstanding against that pitch black BG. Its sharp clear and a very vivid photo.
Best regards

Hi Harry
Impresionante retrato de esta Atlas, una maravilla de foto, donde esta posada, vamos que me gusta todo.
Un saludo

Hi Harry.
Stunning colours and goes perfect with a dark background really making both stand out. The moth blends in so perfect to the colour of the flower.
Detail is equisite, beautiful.
Does this fit into our theme 'Our World at Night'? being a moth.

Hi Harry,

Beautiful colors for both the moth and the flower.
The sharpness is spot on, as usual.
Thanks for the macro tip at the end of your note.

I like this shot alot as the moth's body and wing shapes matches that of the bird of paradise plant and flows in the same direction and all with exciting colors. Super capture! :)

Hi Harry,
Excellent capture of this amazing beautiful butterfly. Coloration, details, sharpness and composition excellent. good notes. thanks for showing
have a nice weekend

Absolutly marvellous. I love the colors of this masterpiece photo, so well captured with perfect sharpness and lighting.

Harry hi..
Almost 'Art Deco'....
Well done

Hello Harry. This is an very lovely picture of an impressing specie. Exposure is spot on, so we can see all the details with beautiful light and colours. Great DOF and focus.
I personaly think it is a bit too colour saturated, but that is only question of personal taste, monitor settings, etc. I dared a fast workshop, hope no to spoil too much this fantastic capture.
Thanks and regards, Felipe.

Hi Harry,
You've got the best from this wonderful butterfly. Black background and flower work together to get a very aestetic result.
José M.
PS. Definitively -as Tom said- light comes back in a few ns asuming that background is at distances of 1 m order. I think that the background is very underexposed because of the greater distance to the flash. But I've not studied this phenomenon carefully. In any case, I see that you certainly know to get a black background!

Hi !!

You have an impressive portfolio here ! This one really popped out ! Great colours an very beautiful subject.

Hi Harry
It's really amazing picture. The moth is very interesting but also the background is great. Thanks
