Oh no! - I hear you say, not another puffin! Well this time it is a welsh puffin! I took this at the main puffin site on the island, but quite frankly, I thought the smaller number near the landing site presented better photographic opportunities as they were either above you, or at eye level.

Skomer Island lies just to the South-West of the Marloes Peninsula of Pembrokeshire. Time, the continuous erosion by nature's forces and the relative movement of sealevel to landmasses have turned Skomer into what it is now: an island effectively cut off from the rest of Pembrokeshire by Jack Sound, a narrow stretch of water, renowned for its strong tidal currents. The island's isolation has meant that mammalian ground predators such as rats, cats, dogs and foxes are absent. This is one of the major reasons for the island's importance as a breeding ground for burrow nesting seabirds. People are only present in the form of daytime visitors (with only a small number allowed to stay the night in self-catering accommodation run by the Wildlife Trust South & West Wales and the warden and students of Skomer's unique wildlife). All combined Skomer truly is a magnificent location for birds and other wildlife and bird-and-wildlife-loving people alike.

Skomer is probably the most important breeding site of Manx Shearwaters in the world, with an estimated population of 165,000 pairs (50% of the total world population). It is difficult to find spots on the island which are not burrowed by them.

Puffins breed on Skomer in large numbers as well: approximately 6,000 pairs have been counted. Other birds present in large numbers are Guillemots, Razorbills and of course the ever present gull family: Kittiwakes, the smallest, the Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls and the enormously big Great Black-backed Gulls.

I had to hand-hold this shot - the viewing area is quite small, so as not to disturb the puffins who have to cross it to get to their burrows, so tripods etc are discouraged.

Hi James,
I just love your Puffin shots - they look so cute and beautiful. Set among the greeneray and the white flowers it looks majestic here. Very sharp details and lovely colours. Perfect lighting and focus. Excellent POV and a superb composition. Kudos.

Hello James,
Puffins are lovely. Perfect focus and well exposed photo. This one is very cute. Beautiful flowers are excellent setting for this photo. TFS,

Hi James, its not all of us that get to see a Puffin. My only exposure is what you feed us here, so I'm not in a rush to have you stop. I don't know why (maybe because its of my lack of exposure to these guys) but I have always pictured them as being close to rock. Placing this guy in a field of daisies then is a nice twist. Excellent control of the light and shadow on this one.

Thanks, John

hello James,
These puffins are really cute and a camomilla one is just exceptional! I never have seen these birds, but I think they are so touching. You made an excellent composition, placing the bird on the right side of this marvellous camomile-meadow.Excellent point of view too.
Have a nice day

Hi James
Wonderful capture of him in his environment. They look hard case characters. Great composition with him off to the right of the frame and not centre with great exposure, colour and detail, spot on.

Hi James,
Beautiful image of this Puffin, looks glorious amongst the chamomile too! Excellent sharpness and details in the plumage and I love the mult-coloured beak! Great composition and great notes! Well done and TFS
Cheers Tina :-)

Nope instead of saying OH NO another Puffin - I said "OH COOL! How sweet!"
I love these little creatures. I am amazed these little guys are real and not just mythical. ha ha THis is a beautiful shot - love the flowers in the background.
So what's the little yellow thing near it's mouth? I've seen this in other photos (and you've probably explained it before. ha ha)

Awww... this has to be one of the sweetest pictures I've seen... just lovely! Great POV, very nice composition, natural colors and good DOF. All combine, along with a subject that everyone loves, to create an enchanting photo. Well done !

TFS, Mish

Hi James,
Lovely composition with the pretty puffin surrounded by the camomile flowers. Well captured, as usual. Regards,

Hi James.

I could not help reading your intro and was thinking that that is the opposite to me... started off PhD... (didn't complete becuase of ill health), ended up working for govenment and now work in education (though not as a teacher...) just much younger.... have you read David Attenborough's book on his career? well worth it...

I've also just got back from an island full of puffins, black guilliemots, artic tern, great and artic skuas and all sorts of others.... so I could not help but admire this picture becuase I have one very similar which I guess I will post at some point... I was lucky with my puffin though. It came in and landed almost at my feet. I had to step back along the cliff edge to be able to focus on it becuase it was too close for my 300mm! (Westray and Papa Westray in the Orkney's.)

Anyhow - love the picture. the composition is great, the light excellent and the flowers are wonderful.
