This pair of American Avocets was looking for breakfast in the early morning on a mud flat near Brooks.

American Avocet
Recurvirostra americana

General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

The breeding distribution of the American Avocet is in western North America from the southern prairie provinces to central Mexico. In Alberta, this is throughout the grassland and parkland region, and increasingly with extensions into the southern boreal forest region.

Feeding by sweeping its bill from side to side in scythe-like motions, it intercepts aquatic insects and crustacea, and seeds of aquatic and marsh plants. It also picks insects from the water surface.

The nest site is usually on the sun-dried mud of a slough or alkaline wetland. It is usually just a depression in the open, although later it may be hidden by weeds. Four eggs are laid and incubated by both sexes for 22-24 days. The young are capable of running and feeding themselves as soon as dry, but are protected by the adults. They achieve full independence when about 6 weeks old.

Hi Rick.
Wonderful image of these two avocets in the mud flats. Exposure, colour and detail are great. DOF soft but still some detail of the environment they are in is nice.
Excellent image

Hello Rick,
Great capture of a pair of American Avocets: nice and sharp and with good lighting and fine blurred BG sharp enough to make out a Wison's Phalarope.
This is a fine shot. I can't get close enough to our Avocets to approach this standard.
Thanks for sharing this,

Hello Rick,
Beautiful capture from nature.Well caught, framed and composed.

Hi Rick
Excellent compo (I also like the Wilson's Phalarope in the BG), great colours and good sharpness.
However the picture looks extremely pixelated, might be a problem of resizing or oversharpening

It's so nice to see the Advocet in his natural surrounds. It's hard to believe such a interesting looking bird lives on our Prairie.
