Hello Anne,
This is a superb sharp and well composed macro. Great lighting, detail and BG and it looks good against the white flower.
But I don't think this is a Robber Fly: they have more separated eyes to be able to see their prey. I am not a dipterist, but I think this is a species belonging to the Bibionidae.

Exposure is excellent and the composition with the diagonal line of the fly is very good.

Hope your son has used the "wild Pansies" medicine and is now feeling better.
This fly is very common in Australia. It kills bees. It belongs to the: Asilidae family.
And you can read about it on the internet.

Your image is IMPECCABLY EXCELLENT.

At first some correction to species ID - this is not a robber fly (Asilidae) but most probably a Empididae species. This family can be easy recognized thanks to long mouthparts (Asilidae do not have such long one).
Anyway, this is a very nice macro, with very good details. Only some noise reduction would be nice :)

peut être inconnue mais particulièrment réussie comme cliché.
Le plan serré donne des détails superbes, le blanc et noir sont bien associés. Une petite correction du bruit est néccessaire sur le BG.

La coleur blanche de la fleur fait ressortir cette mouche

This a fantastically sharp picture. I also had a day in my village in england where there were many of these flys and I failed miserably to capture a shot anywhere near to yours..I did however capture one in a foxglove bell where his thorax is unmistakably the same fly. I am truly in awe of your pictures sharpness and detail and many thanks for sharing it.
