Finally I got a chance to capture my one of the favourite butterflies the common lime. This butterfly is so restless that i could not manage a single decent shot of this beautiful insect last season, hope that this season will be good.

The Common Lime or the Lemon Butterfly (Papilio demoleus) is a common and widespread Swallowtail butterfly. It gets its name from its host plants which are usually citrus species such as the lime. It is also sometimes called the Chequered Swallowtail. Unlike most swallowtail butterflies it does not have a prominent tail.

Habitat

Its range indicates the butterfly's tolerance and adaptation to diverse habitats. It is to be found in savannahs, fallow lands, gardens, evergreen and semi-evergreen forests and shows a preference for stream and riverbeds.

In India it is mostly found in the plains but can be found on the hills of peninsular India and up to 7000 feet in the Himalayas. It is common in urban gardens and may also be encountered in wooded country.

Habits

Lime butterfly baskingThis butterfly is an avid mud-puddler and visitor of flowers. It basks with its wings held wide open on tufts of grass, herbs and generally keeps within a metre above the ground, even on cloudy days. It relies on its quick flight for escape.

It is an interesting butterfly in that it has a number of modes of flight. In the cool of the morning, the flight is slow considering that it is an edible and unprotected swallowtail. As the day progresses, it flies fast, straight and low. In the hotter part of the day, it may be found settling on damp patches where it will remain motionless, except for an occasional flutter of wings, if not disturbed.

It is also a frequent visitor of flowers in gardens, where it shows a preference for flowers of smaller herbs rather than larger plants such as the ubiquitous Lantana with its plentiful blooms. It can be found swarming in the groves of its foodplants.

While resting, the butterfly closes its wing over its back and draws the forewings between the hindwings.

Hi Pankaj,
A beautiful POV of this lime butterfly. Composition wise excellent capture. Thanks a lot for sharing. Sorry :D later.

Pleasing and colorful image Pankaj, it's well focused where it must be. Very good exposure and nicely OOF BG. Not sure about this POV, although it does show the inner and outer wing patterns well..
Well done.

Hello Pankaj,
Excellent capture of this beauty from a nice POV. I like how the leaves and the butterfly form a diagonal in this beautiful composition. Great sharpness, good light and fine colours too.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Pankaj, elegant butterfly with splendid colors, excellent focus, great sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Pankaj.
Very nice composition showing the inner and outer wing colours. Would have been nice if he was looking your way but seeing they are hard to get, then this is better than not getting him at all. Well done.
There is a slight softness on the closer wing, maybe he had moved or his wing came out past the plane of focus.
Lovely image, I am glad you got one this season after missing last season.

You chose your perspective thoughtfully while aiming your lens at the subject "up there", Pankaj. We have a clear view of both sides of its wings, the antennae and the eye. I know it makes a difficult POV, but there lies the challenge which you have met successfully.
The lovely patterns and colours on the wings are well captured in this difficult shot.
Well done and TFS.

Hello Pankaj,
This is an extremely beautiful looking Butterfly, no wonder you have been after an image of it for a while. Congratulations on your success. Nice detail and OOF background.
Cheers,
Debbie

Bonita. Bellos colores y contrastes. Tiene similitudes con mi mariposa ya que en esta también se ven las dos alas. El enfoque y lacomposición correctos. Saludos Pankaj.

Hi Pankaj,
Splendid capture of the gorgeous Lime butterfly. They are very difficult to shoot as they are very nimble and spritely. The colours and patterns are awesome and you have captured a nice pose here. Excellent POV and it is highlighted against the darkish BG superbly. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
