Yes, it seems that we have a new species of dragonfly in Sweden! With the help of the long hot summer of 2006, there was a population explosion of the Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator) in C. Europe. A number of these came to S. Sweden and they seem to be here to stay.

We saw both this male patrolling over a recently created pond and the female ovipositing in a nearby smaller and shallower pond. WORKSHOP

To the credit of the National Department of Defence, these ponds were dug out on our nearby army shooting range primarily to create homes for the threatened Natterjack and Green toads. One can speculate about the survival of their tadpoles with the appearance of the voracious Emperor Dragonfly nymphs!

Though we can see a number of photos of settled Emperors on TN, I have yet to capture one resting. Instead, I spent some time and a number of attempts at photographing the male in flight. This is the best of the shots that I took.

As usual this shot was taken with the camera hand-held and the distance was about 4 meters. The dark blue BG is water reflecting the sky.

Hi Ivan,

Wow! This might be the best in-flight shot I have seen - and it's a little dragonfly!! Absolutely superb - looks like a small airplane coming at you. The colors and crisp details are amazing. I love that blue, the wings, and that wonderful sky. This is what picture perfect is.

Hello Ivan,
I believe you have set a new mark for in-flight dragonfly photos. This is the best I have seen. Sharpness and details are stunning. The perfections of exposure and colors are amazing. The angle of the dragonfly, with face fully visible, could not be better. The amount of wing blur is perfect. Very crisp and clean ingae and IMO, a "once in a lifetime shot." CONGRATULATIONS!
Ken

Hi dear Ivan , my friend,
this is excellent shot at nice moment.
well composed and great focus.
A perfect shot.
thanks for sharing
my best regards
Saeed

At 1/800, the dragonfly has frozen into an amazingly sharp image, Ivan. Your hands must be rock steady to capture such a great shot hand-held.
Each colour and detail is sharp and distinct in this picture and the uniformly blue BG of the sky allows no distractions at all.
Well done and thanks for sharing it.

Gorgeous Ivan...slick work creates a really dynamic look with excellent detail and smooth clear b/g...technicals spot on with a difficult subject. Best, Brat.

Hi Ivan,
Great capture and very good timing from you.
This is super. The sharpness and details are excellent. Very difficul to capture, so well done.

Hi Ivan,
It's always hard enough to get sharpness like this at an insect sitting still, but what you did achieve with this dragonfly in flight is awsome.
Perfect DOF and exposure.
Wonderful movement in the wings and light.
The way the insect does stand out against the blue BG is very beautiful and so are colors and details.
Perfect work. My compliments
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Harry

Everything is perfect, I especially love the POV and great DOF

Hi Ivan,
this is perhaps even a more beautiful picture of a flying dragonfly. Have you set the lens to manual focus or can your camera keep up with the speed of the dragonfly?

Hello again my friend

Afte taking a look at your last post, i plunged into your gallery just to see what other Odonats species - rarer than that one - you managed to capture.
To my personal pleasure, i saw many, but when i saw this one, i just said: WOW!
This is simply outstanding! I've always wanted to capture an Anax imperator - fluing or resting - but never really managed a decent picture.
Here, the details, colors, light and composition are all absolutely brilliant! I really like the way you managed to keep the entire body length in full focus and that there is nothgin else in the frame only this respect commanding male.
Magnificent work, Ivan!!!

Bravo and TFS
Horia
