[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The MANTIS (Mantis Religiosa, order of Mantidaes) is an insect that can be found in many parts of the world with a mild/warm climate. In France, they live mainly in the southern half, with some exceptions. They are not frequent in Normandy and it's only the second one I see this year. I was lucky to find this one late in the evening on our garden table... just before dinner. Much more difficult to find them in the nature, where they are expert in camouflage. As the sun was low, I decided to shoot backlight, to get the maximum contour details on the fore arms, very special to this great insect hunter. They are easy to shoot, as they don't move much if you don't bother them... so, dinner will wait for a while.
Females (avg 6 cm) are much bigger than males (avg 4cm) and look more solid. Long thin body, green or brown. When resting, wings are folded on the back. The remarkable feature is the pair of fore arms where femur and tibia can be folded up as a knife blade, equipped with spines to hold their preys. Very mobile head and thin feelers. The eggs are included in an eggbag where they stay during the winter. Larvaes and imagos are carnivorous: camouflaged in the vegetation, they watch their future victims, forearms together, and unfold them in a quick movement for capturing.
Tech (PSE): Brightness +47, contrast +30, backlight darkening +7. NeatImage to soften the background.

A very good capture.
Nice vivid colour of the mantis and good DoF.
A good and informative note too.
Very well done.

Jean Michel, Nice picture with a complete mantis. Also the subject is well isolated from it's background. A little more light (fill-in flash maybe) would have revealed more detail in the abdomen.
Very nice shot.
Greetings, Jan

Wow, super photo that shows this mantis off beautifully against the background. Colours are great, as is DOF and sharpness.

very good one Jean Michel,
Very good macro, I like the shot a lot, very good colour and good dof, very good job.

This is a great shot. Noce detail and colours. Nice note too. Great work on this macro. Thanx for sharing.

Une jolie macro de mante ! Le fond en bois n'est pas désagréable et la fait bien ressortir.

Gran captura Jean Michel.
Muy buena definicion, el color verde del insecto es impactante realmente.
Adecuada profundidad y encuadre, al igual que la nota que la acompaña.

Great capture Jean Michel.
Very good definition, the green color of the insect is impressive really.
Suitable depth and frame, like the note that accompanies it.

I love MAntis, is original, has a lot of style and is just a bug! Very good note and excellent macro, he looks to have an alien head and the way he uses his "Hands" is divinal!

Well done, great composition

I've missed this one. Very nice, original POV in terms of lighting and the wood. It's great that you got the whole thing in, it looks pretty mean!

Very good capture of this "alien". I really love the pose here. Colours are great and IMO you handled the dof very well. Very interesting note too.

tres belle prise ! la pdc est tres bien gerée, le bois fais ressortir a merveille la bete. On dirait qu'elle posait specialement pour toi ;)
tres bonne note.
tres belle photo !

Jean Michel, great job. I do like the sharpness and the "pose" of the insect. Great and humorous note too.

Great shot did you turn on the music to make her dance like this?
