Please refer to brilliant note from Gerhard on link http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Africa/South_Africa/East/Free_State/Hennenman/photo5197.htm.

This was taken near the Sandriver outside of Virginia, Free State. He was one of many in the area and I stood next to the reeds and took pictures as and when I could. Very active birds today and the wind was really blowing – that’s why his plumage is very ruffled. I used a Canon 580 EX flash to do the fill in work at about 8-10 metres away.

I have cropped a bit and a little contrast. I am sure that some of the background can be changed, but I am not good enough at that yet.

Comments most welcome. Tim

Excellent shot you have there Tim.
Brilliant natural colors and good dept.

What a great shot of this colorful bird! The wind ruffling his feathers makes it very unusual to see. Looks like a long lost relative of our North American Cardinal. I like the delicate green shoot he's standing on as the support - it contrasts nicely with the colors of the bird itself. In this case, you would have had a hard time cloning out bits of the background, and I think its fine - shooting in nature you often have to take what you can get.

It is a nice one Tim,
It is a differcult pose, but I must say you capture it very good with a fantastic pof, good sharpnes and fantastic colours, very good job.

I think you have done well on this capture, Tim. Good color, details and composition. He appears a little furry with the wind ruffling his feathers like this. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Tim, this is really very nice. Excellent composition, pov, colors, sharpness and pose.

Congratulations.

Very nice portrait Tim.
Great colours, pose, compostion and details.
The black in the plumage is little underexposure but thats just a minor nit.
Great work.

I like the background, I think it accents the bird well. Such a interesting "action" shot, looks like he has "goosebumps" Well done.

excellentes couleurs ! vous avez des oiseaux superbe en Afrique du sud !
bien vu et merci de partager !

Hi Tim
Here with us, they are already loosing most of their colours - well done, a nice, fat, fluffy finch, just the way I love them.
Try and rotate horizontally, and note the difference it makes to you image's impact. It is a subjective thing, try it. I would also crop just a wee bit on the top. Very nice, brongthem on.

Fantastic shot Tim,
You've captured him very well, nice details, colours. Excellent composition
Thanks for posting

Stunning picture of this incredibly colorful bird. Great details, exposure, and composition. I really like all his ruffled feathers, showing off all different shades of orange.
Beautiful contrast against the black. Great job, Tim. TFS.

Tim its a great photo of a difficult customer to capture correctly believe me I have tried.

The dark plumage is well managed. (it misjudged it on my crappy monitor at work, I wonder where they buy this crap... :) )

The rest is spot on. Rotate the photo horizontally to see if it makes a difference.

I dared a WS let me know what you think.

You are certainly getting the images now Tim, and it seems you are doing an excellent job!
This is a great pose and a striking capture of this curiously pretty bird!
I've seen many pretty birds in my life, but who would have ever thought without seeing it that one would be colored like this...
Thanks for sharing,

Hello Tim,
This is realy a beauty. Sharp, contrasting colours against the soft BG. Pose and composition are great. Most of all I like the details in the middlepart of the bird.
Regards,
Peter
