[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Greetings everyone! No, I did not fall of the face of the earth. It just feels that way sometimes. Sorry for my spotty attendance here lately. Seems like most of my photography has been non-nature related. I did manage a trip to the St. Louis Zoo early Sunday morning and took this shot in their butterfly house. I was really trying to be creative with this tight composition and crop. I am very happy with the result, but I wanted to run it by everyone before I commit to trying a large print.

Blue Clipper Butterfly - Parthenos sylvia lilacinus

This butterfly is found in two locations, the Philippines and Malaysia. The butterfly looks quite different depending on where it is from. The butterflies from the Philippines are brown and cream in coloration. In comparison, the butterflies that come from Malaysia are a bright blue or green color. They are still considered the same species, though the species from Malaysia is called a subspecies: Parthenos sylvia lilacinus. The larvae of this butterfly feed on two different plants in the family Passifloraceae, Modecca sp. and Adenia palmata.

Hi Scott,

Nice to see you again! I think this is beautiful and would make a fantastic large print. It is very unusual and colorful and very well done. I love the rich colors and the wonderful composition. Extremely artistic and marvelous.

Jane

I don't think I could praise this photo enough.
We've all seen a million butterfly photos but this offers something unique.
Nicely composed. Great saturation. The focus is wonderful and those colours are so eye-catching!

Scott, this is completely stunning, I'm so glad I was one of the first to comment on it! Your photography has improved to professional quality, I am constantly amazed!

DOF and colors are perfect, the proboscus deep in the flower is amazing, and I love the bonus ant!

TFS,

Alli

Hi Scott,
Beautiful close up, crop in a diagonal way
showing perfect details, the DOF is great and
the composition unique. TFS. Best regards/Lawhill

Hi Scott,
This is really a CLOSE UP! :-)
I think is very good the graphic aspect of the composition you bring to us.
It's so beauty the contrast of colours and textures of the butterfly and the flowers.
I like also the other contrast here: the size of the butterfly and the ant.
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Scott

Nice, very nice. It certainly is creative and rather different than the normal stuff. I think you could well proceed and do your large print as it surely won't be a waste of photo paper. Heck, it's even a 3 species shot; the butterfly, the ant, and the flower.

The diagonal placing of the clipper, the close-up nature of the shot, and the very tight crop makes this an incredibly neat composition. The f/16 aperture ensured amazing depth and brought out great details on the butterfly and the flower. The colours are splendid and visually pleasing. There's not much to see of the BG, but the bit that's there is well OOF. The exposure is perfect and together with the fill-in flash ensured remarkable lighting on the subjects.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. And of course it's great to see a posting from you again my friend. Take care.

Hi Scott,
A beautiful composition of this BF with quenching its thirst with nectar. Very nice colors and details. I like the way you have composed it. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Scott, you should certainly print this. The colours are bold and beautiful, with awesome contrast. This is a poster in the making.

Thanks, John

Bufff. Has desplegado tu habilidad en esta toma consiguiendo un encuadre y unos contrastes excelentes. La gran profundidad favorece a la planta, que combinada con la mariposa, dan como resultado una foto plástica, original y diferente. Enhorabuena Scott !

A beautiful compostion! Great color contrast! Excellent DOF and exposure.

A very eventful momment to capture, probably one of the best examples showing the use of their proboscis tubular tongue, and taking full advantage of it too. I would definitely go for the blow-up enlargement. Very nicely done Scott, also good to see you posting. I stopped by your website earlier this afternoon to see how it's coming along. :)

Hi Scott
WOW,Absolutely Incredible. Detail, sharpness and color very nice.
TFS!!!!

Absolutly beautiful. Really nice with great colours, sharpness.

Hi Scott,
Outstanding close-up of the Blue Clipper. Lovely colours, clear details and sharp focus. I like the diagonal alignment and the positioning. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Would surely make a fantastic large print. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Scott

What a fantastic macro. Not only do we have a clear view of this beautiful Blue Clipper sucking up the nectar, but we also have a tiny ant keeping a watching eye.... amazing..... congrats my friend! :-)

Hi Scott
Excellent POV with this butterfy sucking the nectar of the flower
Great macro too.
I like that you focused to the lunch time and not to the butterfy
TFS and see you

Hi Scott,
Great composition, the half butterfly half flower division of the photo works very well. Clear sharp image,
regards
Matt.

The detail on the wings is beautiful and the composition is great. Butterflies are so hard to get close to just to get their picture but you have managed do an artistic shot too. I am just learning how to stalk them to get a decent picture!

Hi Scott,
this was close!
Beautiful colours, well composed with a a nice diagonal
and very fine details.
Maybe you should give it a bit more light before to do the printing.
Great work, my friend.

Wonderful Scott. Incredible details with the XCU of the butterly, flower and even ant. I couldn't tell from the thumbnail there was this much going on. But when I clicked and saw the big picture, it really took my breath away. Amazing colors, a good angle to capture all this, and nice DoF to keep the focus on the ant and the scales on the butterfly, with enough details on the flower, and not much left for the bg.
Mike
P.S. The butterfly pavillion is my favorite part of the zoo.

Hi Scott,
OH WOW........
by the way I love it, the color is spectacular and I love the tight crop ..the diagonal line of the butterfly ..wow...its awesome..its in my favs now! TFS

Hello Scott,
A very attractive colour palette, contrasting well!
The close-up qualities are amazing, superb texture in the insect and the small ant is a bonus...
Well framed and a fine dynamic composition!

Hi Scott,
Go for the large print immediately. This is awesome. Such wonderful details and such stunning colors. The extreem close capture of the butterfly and flower is breathtaking. I really like the creative composition and the fact that you had the guts to only show part of the b'fly, while most of us want to show the entire insect. The bonus of that little ant is great.
TFS,
Niek

Hola Scott,
10 puntos

Hi Scott.
You managed to create a terrific impressive shot. Its creative idea and brilliant realization impress the imagination. Crop is amazing. Combination of two charming triangles created by butterfly and its beautiful wings and wonderful flowers with nice green BG is stunning. Lighting and colours are perfect as well as the details of all components of the image. Superb art work. Bravo and TFS.

Hi Scott
I was trying to find a descriptive word that no one else used for your photo...most were already taken. Here is what I came up with...AWESOME, a unique and artistic view of this Blue Clipper Butterfly. Awesome detail, colour and especially the composition. Totally original!
TFS Janice

Wow! A creative and artistic photo!
Well done...
Cecilia

Hi Scott,
so that definitely is a different view on Parthenos sylvia!
What a convincing argument for taking shots in butterfly houses: you are relaxed enough to get creative. In the wild, I tend to be content and happy just to have pressed the button a moment before the b-fly has gone.
A breathtaking artistic combination of patterns, smooth juicy colours, petals, scales, proboscis, and ant.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Scott,
when I saw the thumbnail I thought, that's interesting!!! upon opening I can now add, that's unique, I believe it's the first time I have seen something composed this way. It's very artistic and original. Good detail with your Macro lens. I think the little ant is perfect here...it gives a good scale for the Blue Clipper.
Well done,

Hi Scott!
Wonderful colourful close-up that really shows us all the intersting details, including the little bonus ant. The tight composition works very well here. Tiny nit: the eyes are bit dark, would consider selectively lightening them for a print. As is it is excellent!

Good to see you're still around. This is a great composition, quite striking. Good exposure, great colour and detail. I think the head is a little dark, it seems a bit lost and would benefit from lightening a little. Beautiful image though and a very artistic composition.
