Back from my holiday now and returning to the realities of work! The only thing that can be said about it is that it has come as a very big shock to the system. The Orkney Islands are well worth a very long visit... next time...

This was the first (real) day of my holiday and the day I met Niek (SunToucher). I had met up with him in Glencoe and was giving him a guided tour of the areas around Glencoe and Rannoch Moor which I know so very well. This is the spot where within a couple of hundred meters of dropping off my husband, we stopped for a wonderful reflection on Loch Tulla.

The main mountain in the background is Stob Ghabhar (slightly to the right of center) whose name translates into Peak of the Goats. I haven't seen any wild goats on it, but parts of it are very steep and as a child I saw an avalanche on it...

Much to Niek's disappointment we were literally just off the single track road here. He had thought that a lot of these photos were further from civilisation that they actually are - mainly because I don't include any manmade structures in my photos becuase I hate them...

I have resisted the urge to 'straighten' the peaks in the reflection with their originals becuase the moment I straighten one of them, the rest get even worse. I think this is becuase I was at 17mm, so I decided to leave it be on this photo.

The photo has been 'editted' a touch in that I was too lazy to get my ND grad filter out of the car and clean it off, but the picture is taken using my 105mm B&W circular polarising filter. I have then created a second version of the photo from the RAW image that is slightly brighter, and then used a mask filter to combine the 2. If the image is a little too dark it is becuase lightening it overexposes the clouds in the sky (as opposed to the reflection) - guess I should have gone back to the car!

Hopefully Niek will do one of his HDR images on one of his versions and make more of it than I have been able to. I still need to play with the software more before I can produce acceptable results. Niek's photo can be found here.

PS - the 'dots' at the bottom of the photo are leaf litter floating on the surface of the loch and not sensor or lens dirt...

Hi Emma,
stunning shot, you really looked for the composition here IMO. The clouds are obviously fantastic and the peaks on the right lead the eye nicely through the frame. Seems you had much better weather than me on my visit, both times i crossed through Rannoch Moor it was either raining hard or completely overcast. Look forward to more of your shots.

Amazing to see a lake this size so calm all over, and the water surface works better than any polarizer...

Hi Emma

Greetings from Beijing.

A wonderful shot - the symetry and DOF are great. The reflected clouds are excellent.

Hello Emma,
Good vista. I like the overwhelming clouds refelection.
Well done

I like this image very much. Great clarity in this shot, framing is excellent, the water is so still in the foreground.
Best wishes,

Ho Emma
What an amazing picture. I'm really impressedby the reflection of the landscape in the water. (I always admire photos with reflexes in the water). Wonderful landscape, colours and sharpness of the picture. I like also the frame made from the grass on the bottom of the image. I really would like to be in the place you have taken picture of.

Hello Emma,
Very beautiful capture, I just love the water reflection
Great POV and sharpness, very well composed

Breath taking, Emma! I am saving my $ for a trip to Scotland, hopefully some time in the next five years. Glencoe, Rannoch Moor and the Strathspey-Badenoch area are the places I most want to see and photograph -- preferably at heather time.

That is an amazing reflection Emma. I'm sure Niek had a great time with you as tour guide. It does look very uninhabited. I'm not sure what you mean by "straighten the peaks". The only things that bothers me a bit are the very dark foreground grasses and the reflected sky being so much more saturated than the actual sky. it is a lovely scene though.

Evelynn : )

Hi Emma,
A very impressive image!
I like so much the mirror effect of that calm waters, it really works like a true mirror.
It's very good the different light zones got along the image, thanks to the clouds, it adds variety and richness to the composition.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.

Outstanding colours, superb details, and fabulous composition

Hi Emma.
Wow! Magnificent reflections and clarity. Great composition and colour. Amazingly beautiful. I wondered where you'd got to. And I see you met up with Niek. He has posted some lovely shots from this trip too. Well done.
Best regards, Steve.

Hi Emma,
I'm not sure if I will have a HDR version uploaded, but I will surely have a photo that looks a lot like this. Same water, same clouds but just a slightly different POV. Actually, I haven't even checked these photos yet, so I am not even sure what they are like.

It looks like you had a great trip up north and got very lucky with the weather. The nasty stuff actually stayed more south untill I boarded the plane.

You captured the magic of this place perfectly. It was funny to realize that the road is only 50 meters away.

A wonderful image, Emma. I really love what you saw, and I think you did a great job recording it. I love those soft green hilss, the puffy white clouds, and the crisp reflection. I am a little bothered by the difference in the exposure in the clouds versus the reflection. I have a couple options that you might want to consider:
1. Play with the layers a bit more to match the exposures.
2. Crop some of the OEd clouds on the top, and make the story about the hills and reflection (I like the grass on the bottom, and I think a pano crop would bring them out even better.

EMMA!! wow!! What a great photo to come back with! Wow..wow..wow....I love the bright colors and the contrasting colors..what great reflections! I love this photo...TFS
And welcome back!!

Hello Emma,
Thank you so much for all your outstanding landscaping photos todate, they are outstanding and excellent presentation to me!
landscapers always look for the same breed to share the wonderful moment in best kept photos!
I loved this one with every landscaper wants!
thanks for sharing, Emma
greeting from NZ

This is unworldly, I am stunned by the majestic projections of the clouds on the water.

Hi Emma,
A truly breathtaking capture. The mirrorlike state of the lake is quite amazing with not a ripple in sight.Good handling of the contrasts between the dark and bright.Your composition is also very good as you have cleverly added just a touch of the foreground bank and also fully emphasised that the lake is the subject. This is great stuff....well done.
Regards, David

This is very well taken Emma. There's good balance between the mountains and their reflections, and I like the way you included the strip of grass at the bottom - having that barrier between the frame edge and the rest of the image works a lot better than if you just had the water there.
Like you say in your note, I think it would have been better if you'd used the ND grad - the cloud detail and saturation of the sky are stronger in the reflection, and using the filter would have balanced it out more. Even so, you seem to have done well sorting it out in PP, but the ND grad would have saved you a lot of faffing around on the computer (as I'm sure you know!).
I think it's a very good shot Emma, well done.

Hi Emma,

INCREDIBLE reflection! One of the best I've ever seen!! Perfectly composed and very good colors.

Hi Emma,

This is a superb landscape. The water is so still that it looks like a mirror. I like it very much! Well done.

Hello Emma,
Breath taking shot and a spectacular view. Eexcellent clarity and sharpness as well. Reflection is the best I have ever seen. No wind for good photo hunters?
Thanks for sharing

Hello Emma
Beautiful shot. Reflections are stunning, nice composition.
Regards, Agata

Hi Emma,

I give some critiques on Niek his photo from the lake. No it is a perfect shot. Your's also. But this is an another POV. The colors are natural. You create more depht in the photo. I like that. Your mirror effect is amazing. The sky (clouds) are beautiful. Sharp as well. Great job. Thanks Regards and TFS Bob
