Well as you might have seen from some of Paul’s work that he posted in February, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a day with him, and what a day it was. Having spent the day with him I can now say that I know why his work is so good. Paul is one of those people that do not do things in half measure, he goes all out and this excitement and dedication shows in his work..

Paul, Thanks to you my day was an absolute pleasure. I will most certainly look you up whenever I am in the UK.

Paul took me to a wonderful and very large park named “Bushy Park” where we walked quite a distance in some chilly weather following some Red Deer (and anything else that moved) around. I did not realize that Red Deer was this large and really enjoyed getting close to the big guys.

More about the Red Deer:

Of the six deer species living wild in the United Kingdom today, only the Red (Cervus elaphus) and Roe (Capreolus capreolus) can be called indigenous. The Red deer is the largest mammal in Britain and has been here in some form or other since this island was joined to mainland Europe. Red deer are proven survivors, having struggled through the ice age, a period when their natural woodland habitat was buried under ice and when almost every Briton hunted deer. They overcame the effects of the former and learned to avoid the latter. The ‘deer forests’ of Scotland are far removed as a habitat from that which they would occupy out of preference and yet they adapted in a relatively short period of time to the point where they now have to be managed to prevent over-population.

This photo was taken in very overcast conditions and I am fortunate that the flash did its job.

Hi Japie, thanks for the dedication. This photo is great but I feel it could have been improved if you used your 50-500 mm Zoom, I can't think why you didn't use it ;-)

Seriously, it's a very nice shot, it captures the majesty of the deer.

It was a pleasure spending the day with you too Japie, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Have you tasted that cider yet?

Great stuff Japie.

Excellent shot!
You've used flash and with that way, light seem wonderful...
Thanks for sharing this proud looking red deer:)

Now, can you believe that some will like to hang their hat and brollie on these magnifcsent antlers? This is a very nice pic, as I have said, except for the green hue it induces, but I will have top work on that and post something light green for you as well.
Jokes aside, this is one of the best pics I have seen of this guy, and they feature often in wildlife magazines.

Japie, an artistic shot.

Great pov and a different black bg - which is great.

Nice pose, great composition.

A "wow" photo. Post of the animal is just right. I hope you paid him well!

If you want to give the illusion of more texture the fur (especially with a high quality print), try this:

1. Apply the Watercolor filter with highest detail setting, the in the EDIT menu, FADE to about 15-20%.

1. Apply the Crosshatch filter with a high sharp (about 6-8) and a small stroke (4-6). Set the strength to 1. Then FADE this again to about 15-20%. This takes the digital "blobs" I call them (which become even more prevalent when NeatImage is applied), and adds texture that resembles fur to those areas.
