After spending many hours early on sunday morning taking pictures down by the river. I had been watching the large Dragonflies flying up and down, i sat and studied them for quite a while, i tried to take some shots of them in flight without much success, they seemed to fly in an area of about 30ft and then turn and come back again as if they had a territory. I was hoping they would land so i could get a good shot but this did not happen. After giving up to go home i turned roung and found this Brown Hawker had been behind me all of the time. In me moving it disturbed him so i only got two shots and did not have time to reset the camera so the result was not quite what i was after. But i will go back and try again.

Brown Hawker ( Aeshna grandis ) Length 74mm.
Easily recognised in flight by brown body and bronze wings. Up to 102mm wingspan. At rest blue spots on the second and third segments of the males abdomen can be seen, these are absent in the female. Widespread in South and Central England, most common in the south east, can be found in Ireland but absent from Scotland. Found on well vegetated ponds, lakes, rivers and canals. Patrols regular hunting territory which it vigorously defends against intruders. Hunts flies, Moths and Butterflies. Can be seen Juyt-September. Nymph mostly black and white.

Hi Nick,

Fantastic lighting on this shot! Wonderful position showing off the Brown Hawker beautifully. The colors are beautiful. The light makes the bronze wings sparkle and the yellow flowers are wonderful seen thru the wings.

Hello Nick,
This is an excellent capture as this species that usually settles in the bushes half hidden. Thanks to the beautiful light you've got this very fine shot. I love the clarity of the wings and the sharpness and colours are great.
Well done!

Nicholas, Excellent shot and what a composition. The focus of the fly and the wings are very interesting. Ganesh

hi nicholas,

this one is especialy sharp and stands so well out from its natural background.GREAT
caroline

Well done, Nick. They are really hard to catch - the larger they are - the harder they are to find perched somewhere. But this image is great in detail, despite it being a little dark on the body. Wonderful sheen on the wings! Cheers, Klaus

The back light on wings and dark body makes a nice effect, but BG is a bit too complex and distracting for me to achieve all the beauty of the insect. The blue reflections look wonderful, and the structure of the wings is very well seen. Thanks MF.
Best regards, Felipe.

Nick,
I think you were shooting in some challenging light but still managed to bring out some good detail on the dragonfly. It is nice and sharp. The natural backlight gave you a nice effect on the wings. The background is a bit busy so the dragonfly but I don't think this dragonfly has a habit of choosing a perch that would isolate it and give the kind of background that makes it stand out. I think you did and excellent job under the circumstances.
Regards,
Ken

Hi Nicholas,
You've done well in spite of the difficult lighting conditions..I tried this yesterday, shooting a dragon in shade, with hard backlight from the afternoon sun..
Nice DOF, sharp details, and warm colors.
Well done.
Howard

Wonderful Picture....so symmetric and non-such as in certain patterns. Really grabbed my eye...and I am sitting in front of pictures all day so it takes a bit to get my attention.

Bob

Nicholas,
A fascinating image.
So CLEAR.
So exact.
Loved your notes too.
Regards,
Mario.

Hi Nicholas,
Wonderful shot with fine focus and sharp details. The back lighting works well here and among the greens it looks majestic. Awesome gossamer wings with very delicate patterns. Excellent POV to portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Nicholas,
fantastic shot - I love the moment and the light. This dragon is not easy to catch, when ever I saw one it was flying all the time.
I like the "chinese" eyes so much, thanks
