Hot Lips Puffball
Calostoma Rodwayii

This unusual looking puffball can be found growing from mossy banks and from the ground during autumn in beech forests throughout the southern part of New Zealand.
The fruiting body is about 20mm in diameter, brown and dotted with warts and the short stem is made up of twisted seaweed like strands.
Initially the fruiting body is covered by a scurfy layer which eventually falls away to reveal a pair of red lips. The spores of this fungus are forced out between the lips rather than being puffed into the air as with most puffballs.
The lips on these specimens are not as red as some I've seen. Hopefully next autumn I'll be able to get some better shots than this. This one was not so clear as I was rushed and at the end of a long dark day.
Hope you like it anyway.
Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve,
You must have a bad light condition but the colours and lighting is very nice.
Good sharpness where it counts and the DOF is a bit shallow but
it works very well here.
Have you twisted the picture? ;-)
Well done, my friend.

Hi Steve,
The limited DOF has isolated the one puffball well in the frame..Excellent detail/colors and the low key exposure works nicely here :)
Well done!

Hello Steve
Excellent shot of these strange Puffballs,
Perfect compositio,lighting and DOF,

Hi Steve,

Good sharpness. Naturel colours. POV is oké. From the second fungi is a bit out of focus, but it works very well here. Just what ellis49 said, have you twisted the foto? Regards and TFS Bob

Hi Steve,
A beautiful mushroom. The capture is excellent even though low light. Very good details and notes. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Steve,
Wonderful shot of this Puffball and you managed the difficult light conditions well. Lovely natural colours and sharp details. Very interesting formations. Excellent POV to portray them and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Very nice POV capture of these two "Stalked Puffballs" Steve! Nice composition and focus is nice on the top one!
