Rijk: Animalia (Dieren)
Stam: Arthropoda (Geleedpotigen)
Klasse: Insecta (Insecten)
Orde: Lepidoptera (Schubvleugeligen)
Familie: Nymphalidae (Vossen, parelmoervlinders
en weerschijnvlinders)
Geslacht: Vanessa
Soort: Vanessa atalanta

The Vanessa atalanta or Red Admiral is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. This large butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red and black wing pattern. The caterpillars feed on nettles, the adults drink from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.

In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the pale fire of ivy flowers on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging subjects showing prominently darker colourings than first brood subjects. The butterfly also flies in sunny winter days, especially in southern Europe.

Vliegtijd: eerste vlinders in mei overgaand half juli - oktober. Vliegt in trekkers plus 1 generatie.

Rups: Tot 35 mm.

Bijzonderheden: De vlinder is onmiskenbaar. Vleugellengte 26-32 mm.

I like the sharpness, detail, and well saturated colors. On dark subjects, bring out that detail is more difficult and you did it well. Precise focus on antenna of butterfly and nice texture on leaves.

Hello Thijs,
Another very fine capture of the Red Admiral on Hemp Agrimony that is very popular with butterflies. I like your composition very much and details are sharp and colours natural. Fine soft background too.
TFS and regards, Ulla
