[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Guam Micronesian Kingfisher is already extinct in the wild due to the introduction of brown tree snakes during World War II. Historically, the species was widely found in the forests of Guam. Researchers discovered that after World War II, brown tree snakes had been accidentally introduced to the island. Guam’s birds did not have a defense strategy against the snakes, so they were easy prey. The population began to decline noticeably (along with about a dozen other bird species) in the 1970s. Currently, the Guam kingfisher population stands at nearly 60 birds in 11 North American zoos that participate in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Species Survival Plan (SSP)---a cooperative conservation management program to protect species from extinction through long-term captive breeding.

The Micronesian kingfisher is a medium-sized bird with a large, strong beak. Both males and females have a chestnut head, greenish-blue body, and blue tail. The male’s breast, as seen in this photograph, is a rusty cinnamon, and the female’s is white. You've seen the female of the species previously. This pair lives in the birdhouse of Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.

Beautiful bird,would be great if tail is in pics.

A truely rare capture Ken the head seems very good but the body looks a bit soft, though considering the lighting conditions surrgested by the speed its pretty good especially if hand held. TFS Robert

Excellent picture! Superb details on this tiny bird, superb colors and really well composed. POV & DOF are very good. I like the extremely blurred BG; did you use blur in PP-ing? TFS!

A lovely shot Ken. The colour is very different to the Kingfisher we have in New Zealand. I am yet to get a good shot of one. Here is a link to show you what ours look like. Sad to read that they are already extinct in the wild. Good work. TFS.
