I AM SOOOO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!

Finally i got my new equpment...that probably explains the big smiley from the title :p

I was soooo busy with work lately, i hardly had any time for fun and taking pictures, but now that my new toys are here, i asked for today off and finally got to see how they feel...and i'm telling you they feel wierd...

I mean, they are great!...but so different and also difficult to handle that my last camera. First of all, they are a lot heavier!!! (especially the zoom lens). I told myself i had to go to gim :)))

Second, the aperture is a world apart than that of a compact...it will take some time to adjust to that :)

But even so, even if probably 80% of my photos from today aren't that clear or that good, i still had a lot of fun playing and tweaking with all those adjustments.

This is one of the 20% i considerred to be decent enough for posting. I thought i'd stick to dragonflies since i'm used to shooting those :)

If i'm not mistaken, i think this is a Sympetrum corruptum - the Varigated Meadowhawk, a rather common species here around Tahoe.

Hope you'll like it :)

I have a 400 xti also and I think it is a great little camera. It's lighter than my other SLR but a lot heavier than my point and shoot. Then dealing with various lenses can get awkward. There are always trade offs. I think you will like it a lot. The only thing I miss with it is spot metering and the battery sure doesn't last very long. I think it is a very user-friendly camera. I'm glad you are happy with it.

This is a nice shot and blurred background is lovely. The wings and tail look a bit sharper than the head. I love how he is hanging onto that twig.

This is a splendid shot with very impressive sharpness and nice colours. Superb lighting and it stands out well from the BG. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Horia,
Congratulations with your new toy. I am sure you will get the hang of it soon. Just read the manual and play with it as much as possible. Besides, plenty of people here to help you as well.
The result of one of your first photos is awesome. Super details and colors. You controlled the exposure perfectly and got a beautiful OOF BG.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Horia!

Congratulations! Both - pictures and your new gear look great :-) I'm glad that finally you've got dSLR. Beautifull composition and POV. Excellent composition of colours of Dragonfly and BG. Eyes are slightly OOF but this is minor nit. Overall very good first attempt with 400D!

BTW - latin name of this insect could be easily used as a one of monster's name in Diablo 3 :-)

Hi Horia
It is great to "see" you again. Congratulations on your new camera.

Great photo, nice OOF buckground and composition.

Very best wishes

Hola amigo,
preciosa macro y colores,
buena presentación,
disfruta tu nuevo equipo,

Salut Horia,

Numai bine,
Eddie

Hi Horia

Great news on the new equipment. Have fun playing and make sure that you take it off auto and start shooting in both RAW & Jpeg... Once you have the hang of the camera, you can come back to the RAW files (just use the jpegs for now) rather than wishing that you had taken some of those first pictures in RAW the way I am...

Great start and keep playing. Looking forward to much more to come.

TFS
Emma
(PS I think you selected the wrong lens when you posted the picture... focal length states 263mm...)

Hi Horia,
I'm very happy for you (and also very jealous!) :)
The DSLRs have a much larger range of shooting options that compacts just don't have and I'm sure we'll be seeing some exceptional photos from you and your new kit...even more exceptional than your already exceptional 114 posts. :)
Not that this photo isn't exceptional (o.k. enough with the exceptionals)!!

Awesome shot.
Sharp and detailed.
Excellent colours, saturation and contrast.
Brilliant DOF with a superb BG.
Brilliant composition.
Very well done,
Joe :)

Hi Horia,
a great choice of DSLR too, i have the same and and i love it, now i have finally started to get to grips with it's functions! You have a lot of enjoyment ahead of you. i have found the battery life to be fine, one full charge lasted me nearly a week in Scotland!
Anyway, this is a great start, a fine composition and wonderful colour. Look forward to more from your new toy.
Paul

Hi Horia,
it's great to see you again and congrats to your your new "toys".
You start with a nice macro with pretty good sharpness.
You do not need F32 with your lens, the best aperture is
F8 to F11, more will decrease the sharpness because of the diffraction in digital DSRL and try to use a lower ISO. even it
the noise is under controll you will lose o alot of fine details.
The picture is well composed with good POV and nice colours.
Well done, my friend.

bonjour horia
il me semble que la tête manque legerement de netteté mais c'est un joli specimen et le POV est bien choisit.le BG est egalement reussi;
laurent

Dear Horia.
My heart congratulations. This is a great day at your life (and I think for all of us, your admirers). First step at new life is done. Good luck and many-many new amazing DSLR-pictures.

I like boldly selected exposure parameters. They are great and unusual for you (you are right). Superb scene, superb composition, lovely summer colours and good sharpness. Exposure is great too. Bravo. We are fainting for your new pictures. Bravo for effective work at USA and realization some of your dreams. My warm greetings and TFS.
Alexei.
P.S. What is full set of your new equipment?

Hi Horia,
I'm so glad you finally got your new camera!
Sounds like it's really different from the previous one, but this is one of the lighter DSRL nowadays.
So you're ready to start taking advantage of the larger image sensor, I can't wait to see the upcoming shots from you.
I like so much this wide composition and the pose caught.
My double congratulations for the new kit and the picture.
Warm regards and take care,
JM

Hi Horia

It was lovely to hear from you again. Congratulations on the new camera. I have had my DSLR for almost a year now and I am still adjusting to it but I am glad I made the transition. This is an excellent shot for such a new camera. I can see that you will be taking world class shots with this is no time. Wonderful framing, exposure and POV.

I hope work calms down and you get some time to play

Hello Horia.
Lately I don't spend much time in TN, and it has been a real pleasure to go into your gallery an discover your work with your new equipment. You deserved it very much, MF, and I am sure you will be bringing wonderful captures to TN like this one. Thanks you very much and my best wishes, Felipe.

Hi Horia,
Glad to see you've finally made the move up to DSLR mf.
It won't take long for you to get feel of the new equipment, you're a good study ;}
I would use at least a monopod in the field, to help insure sharpness.
You handled the exposure here perfectly.. Great colors, BG, POV, and good detail @ 1/125 as well.
Good luck, I'll be watching :)
Howard

Hello Horia,
I haven't noticed this new post from you before... This is a very nice capture of this cute insect (that I never managed to capture myself). I like those beautiful details, its pose and neutral BG a lot. The little light in its eye is just lovely. Have fun with your new equipment! Thanks!
Claudine

Hi Horia

Hello Horia,
Fine start with your new equipment with this good shot of a Sympetrum species. Even though you had a v. small aperture there was just a slight miss on the focusing point, that left the head slightly OOF. Otherwise in terms of composition, colour, BG, POV and pose it is an excellent capture.
Well done and I trust the USA tour is successful!
TFS,
Ivan

Hello Horia a nice shot here great POV and DOF interesting variety tfs rgds Necip.

Genial y espectacular captura Horia.
Excelente bg y acertado DoF.
Buena nota.
Saludos, JL.

PS: Congratulations for your new equipment!

Hi again my Friend!
I do not now why I overlooked this image before.
My of all congratulations of new equipment (this fact was also overlooked by me I think).
The picture is really good, but I believe that the focus is kept in the middle part of this colourful dragonfly (not on its head unformtunatelly).
Nice composition and colours, bravo also for delicate BG and note :)
All the best from Lodz in this November evening!
Radomir
