Due to the speed the moon moves at, it was tricky to get good sharp images of the eclipse. The moon in full eclipse was quite dim and required long shutter speeds. This image was taken with my 300mm lens fully open at F4 1sec, ISO 400. Camera mounted on tripod with mirror lock up on.

Thanks for looking.

Luna Eclipse

Although it was a total eclipse, the ring of light around the earth's edge is enough to illuminate the moon's surface, said Graham Murray, Stardome Observatory's education and programmes manager.

If there is enough dust in the earth's atmosphere the surface will appear blood red, as was the case tonight.

An eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun's light. It is rare because the moon is usually either above or below the plane of the earth's orbit.

The lunar eclipse started at around 8.50pm, turning red from 9.50pm onwards. It was completely red at 10pm for an hour, and the eclipse finished at around 12.25am.

The last time a total lunar eclipse was visible over New Zealand was in July 2000, and the next occurrence observable from New Zealand is on December 21, 2010.

For me, this picture is just perfect.
With great colors and sharp.
Congratulations, Paul.

Wonderful shot of a rare astronomical occurance. The red moon is very erie. I like the way you have composed the moon in the lower left. This image at full size would make a dramatic wallpaper.

Hi Pail. Excellent capture of the red colour from last night's lunar eclipse. Very well framed in the diagonal. Most realistic and the same as we saw here. Wouldn't it be good if we had these more frequently? TFS. Murray.

Excellent capture Paul.
You've really managed to catch it at its best here.
I tried shooting it when it was totally eclipsed but didn't get any really clear shots.
You've done a great job.
Well done.
Steve

Super job! I got up at 3:00 am when the eclipse was full to see only a fuzzy orange mass behind FOG!. It had been crystal clear earlier. The color here is magnificent.

Hi Paul,
The best shot I've seen of the yesterday's eclipse.
Beautifull colors and sharpness. Two stars are giving an interesting add-on to this great picture.
Thanks
Claude

OK, that one went into the favorites folder before I even started the critique. Amazing shot...even the stars are visible. Gorgeous!!!! This is something I would buy and hang on the wall. Amazing shot!!!!

Hi Paul,
Thanks for sharing, we could see the eclipse in Costa Rica but not as well as you.

Really good presentation, good composition.

Iris

Amazing color Paul with good detail, considering the parameters of the shot.
Well done.
Richard

Hi Paul.
Wow, you did get an extremely red moon up your way, ours did not get to that extreme red colour here, just amazing and looks like something from another world. Great sharpness and clarity and getting the stars with it is absolutly perfect.
Wonderful image.

Great shot. we too got a good look at the event.
Great details.
The moon glows.
:-)

Excellent result. Had great views in Sydney too but I could n't get the exposure right and my shots didn't come out any good.
Good composition with the two stars and off centre moon.
well done
Chris

Hi Paul,

Brilliant pic, I saw it also but the colours were far more muted. Catch up soon.

Jim

Hi Paul,
This is really a fantastic nightime image the exposure really couldn't be any better. The red result makes this one stand out from the rest. Glad to see you back and I truly hope to see more beautiful captures from a very talented guy. :)

I also got to see this here in ontari canada. Your image is top notch, outstanding work indeed.
