I cycled up to our butterfly locality near home, parked the bike and went to look for interesting subjects to photograph. On my return I saw this 2 cm-long insect on the front mudguard.

It turned out to be a large Robberfly species, Laphria flava (fam. Asilididae), having a meal. It was sucking the life out of a greenish yellow beetle.

Laphria flava is fairly common in coniferous forests on sandy areas in S. sweden and most of Europe. It lays its eggs on dead wood and the larvae feed on beetle larvae in dead wood.

The prey, the 8 mm long yellowish beetle is Cteniopus flavus, (Alleculidae), most common in flowery areas in the eastern half of S. Sweden. They are often seen on flowers such as scabious in June and July. Their larvae live in rotting wood.

The aluminium mudguard is covered in pine pollen and the front light can just be made out in the BG on the left. It is not in the spirit of TN to show man-made objects, but occasionally this is unavoidable.

This shot was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters and cropped by about 50%.
After size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan.
Excellent clear macro shot of this attractive (for us and robber fly) scene. I like excellent sharpness and details of the main subject, amazing nicely coloured BG and wonderful triangle composition. I hope the bike was not at movement. Bravo and TFS.

Very interesting capture ok the law of nature,
Image so sharp and good light
Tank you for sharing
Jean-Michel

Excellent closeup. Nice and sharp and well focused. I'm seeing a lot of robber flies this year. They are really quick when they go after something. I was taking some photos of one and it swooped around and landed on my back as if to send me a little message. :-)

Well done!
Reid

Jag måste ta bort blåhake från min lista och därför har jag bokat en bil och åker till Gävle :) nu i helgen. Det är roligt att träffa Gert och hans polare också :) Hoppas att vädret håller. Nu är det mörkt och det regnar när som hällst...

Hello Ivan,
well observed and captured. Both, predator and prey are clearly seen. In spite of the long working distance and hand-held shot, body hairs of the robberfly can be recognized.
Clearly, the surface of the mudguard is not ideal to achieve good contrast to the robberfly.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan
Splendid photography, clearness, and the colors are remarkable.
If the scene is natural, this is seizing.
Some people make setting in cruel scenes : it is ashamed.
Thank you for this stereotype
Laurent

Hi Ivan,
You were lucky enough to shot these interesting species. On the first sight the robber will look like a giant bee and the poor little leaf beetle was also very beautiful. Nice capture. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan
Very nice document and sharpness, light and compo.
Congratulations.

Hello Ivan,
A very good document showing this aerial predator feeding on a tiny upon your bike, maybe the robberfly was tired and need you carried to it house, ha, ha. Maybe composition needs a little crop in left below corner, but its only my preference.
Best regards
Hernán

Dear Ivan!
I was not in your gallery last time and now I see what I overlooked :)
Very nice documentary picture, I believe not easy to take. These flies are fast even if they are just after finishing hunting :) Also I can see that you are always ready to photograph! I can imagine that you stopped your bike to take picture of this interesting robber fly :)
BG, details, colours and composition are very nice, and the "habitat" original ;>
TFS and best regards from rather cold Lodz,
Radomir

PS. I just added this picture to theme Asilidae of Europe. I hope it is ok for you :)
