Mandarin Duck, Aix galericulata
This lovely female is not so striking as her colourful partner but has her own beauty.
Most female ducks are drabber than the males due to the fact that they must be camoflaged when sitting on the nest.
The orange head and sails and especially the dramatic, tapering white eye-stripe makes the male unmistakeable. The female is also distinctive with her grey head, pink bill and heavily spotted breast and flanks but you have to check that she’s not a female Wood Duck, another species which sometimes escapes from captivity. The key thing to look at is the shape of the white marking around each eye. In Mandarin Duck this extends backwards from the eye in a long, narrow tapering line, like the outline of white spectacle frames, but in Wood Duck it is shorter, broader and more blunt.
Feral populations nest in holes in trees, usually close to rivers or ornamental lakes, especially where rhododendrons provide waterside cover.
A small but well-established feral population exists in various parts of southern England. The stronghold is Virginia Water on the Berkshire/Surrey border.
Widespread in parts of southern England but still elusive.
The feral population of the UK is somewhere in the region of 7 000 individuals, that's 4 times more than the breeding population of Gadwall, the same as in Japan and more than in the rest of Asia!
Photographed at the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust in Arundel, Sussex.

Nice shot Michael,
Very sharp capture. This is the first female I've seen with a red bill. Is this uncommon?

Extremely nice portrait Michael. Razorsharp details and perfect colors. Light & exposure is very good. TFS!

Nice Michael. I finally got to see Mandarins in the flesh last weekend. I have posted a Mrs Mandarin, but my female Mandarin is alot greyer in colouring. Yours appears to be quite young. They are beautiful creatures and I could not believe how friendly they were. Nice work. Keep 'm coming. I can never see enough of them. TFS.
