Spruce Grouse
Falcipennis canadensis
Also known as - Franklin's Grouse.
General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

Spruce Grouse range across the boreal forest region from Alaska to the Atlantic. It was introduced into Newfoundland where it is now established near Gander Lake. The western population was originally regarded as a separate species, known as Franklin's Grouse. In Alberta, its range is confined to the coniferous forested area, along the mountains and the northern half of the province, being totally absent in the grassland and most of the parkland region.

It is a permanent year-round resident of the coniferous forests, disappearing as humans intrude into their environment. This may be due to their total lack of fear of man and his hangers-on, cats and dogs, so they are easily killed off. To see them, one must venture into the wilds of the foothills such as in Kananaskis country.

They feed on the needles and buds of coniferous trees, especially in the winter, but also include insects in summer, augmented by berries when available.

Males are polygamous. The female selects a well-concealed site on the ground, under the low branches of a conifer or in brush to lay her 7-8 eggs which she incubates for about 24 days. The precocial young soon grow their flight feathers and are able to fly at 10-12 days of age.

Hi Rick,

Your Spruce Grouse has a grouchy expression on his face. Wonderful shot of him in a good pose. Wonderful colors and details of his face and plummage markings. Looks great in the natural setting.

Jane

First of all Rick, I love your intro, you have the right attitude. As for the grouse, I must say it is in her own element among all the trees and branches, however you managed to capture her without hardly any disruptions, the colors are real and the shot is sharply focussed. TFS

hi rick!
nice picture on a very fine
bird,like the great nature
feeling in the picture!
good work!

Hi Rick,
A very beautiful capture of this wonderful bird. It is interesting to read that this species of grouse has its habitat in a forrest environment. The grouse I am familiar with live in heathland and grassy areas. This one does make it a bit easier to capture. The details you've captured are wonderful and so it the spot on exposure.
TFS,
Niek
