Better known backyard creatures:
This is one of the bigger (11 mm) flies in the yard, Mesembrina meridiana (Diptera; Muscidae); it may visit flowers --or dung. Here it sits on wilted Oregano Origanum vulgare flowers. The yellow face and the golden base of the arista help to distinguish the species. The back of the head is not yellow, separating the species from a similar one. I thought first that it was a hover fly, but the vena spuria, characteristic of the whole syrphid family in the wing is lacking (you cannot see this in this picture).

The RAW picture was taken with a macro dual flash and a dipod. The picture was processed in Photoshop (add a wingtip, sharpen, blur flower, enhance contrast, resize). Enjoy!

Hello Dietrich,
It's been a while!
Excellent macro of this Muscid fly, allowing us to see a good deal of detail, including the mouth parts and the orange toned inner part of the wings, which I think is diagnostic of the species (though that may be exagerated by the flash).
NIce POV and composition.
Thanks for sharing this and best wishes,

Hi Dietrch,
Excellent detail, and DOF. The POV is excellent! I did a WS to complete my critique.

hallo Dieter,

Hello Dietrich,
Yes, the light of the flash is too strong, but it is a good photo for the ID! We can see very well the golden parts of this fly. Maybe with a PP, we can soften the flash effect... Cheers,
