From Wikipedia:
The Common Kingfisher or the European Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), has a very wide distribution over Eurasia and Africa. This striking blue bird lives primarily besides water bodies.
Adult is bright metallic blue in the upper parts, cobalt on the back, and showing greenish reflections on the head and wings. The ear coverts and under parts are warm chestnut, the chin and sides of neck white. The bill of the female is blackish and reddish orange at the base; the bill of the male is all black; the legs are bright red with a dark blue stripe. In the young the bill is black.

Excelente retrato Caroline !! Magnífico "peinado" y bien capturado el ojo. Toda la cabeza te ha quedado perfecta y además se ven unos colores muy naturales. Muy buena luz y control de los reflejos.

Un abrazo: J. Ignasi

I sure would like to know how you got so close with that 6mm without scaring it...Remote trigger perhaps. Great details and about as close as anyone could get!
Bob

Were you holding the bird? (lol)

Hello Caroline,
Superb close portrait of a juvenile Common Kingfisher. You must have been very close with 60 mm! Maybe this one was captured and someone was holding it for you. Whatever, the sharpness, lighting composition and BG are all first class!
Well done and TFS!

Hi Caroline. A beautiful close up of this common kingfisher. The clarity is superb, easy to admire but not so easy to capture as you have. Colours most lifelike. TFS. Murray.

Hallo Caroline
What a stunner you have here! My first posting was of a kingfisher and now I tend to look for all the others types of kingfishers on the gallery. Going through the web pages on Trek Nature is a new adventure every time, and I can understand why it is so difficult to get away from the PC. There are just so many talented photographers on the site and they all have such spectacular portfolios. Your photo of "Female common kingfisher" popped up on my screen and it is definitely worth more than just one smiley. I just love the different colours of the plumage and adore the funky hairstyle ( I mean feather style). This is an absolute marvelous close-up with clear details. The glint in its eye is a special feature that rounds off this magic photo. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
