Family: Lycaenidae (Blues)

Wingspan: 30 - 32 mm.

A sunny but cool and windy day in the mountain meadows, and a female and a male butterfly closely together on a Centaurea flower. Both were not so much interested in each other but fighting together against the strong breeze. Such is life.

It gave me a good chance to approach them. They do look different, the female dark brown, the male fiery red - the alpine subspecies of the Purple-edged Copper (Lycaena hippothoë eurydame) showing sexual dimorphism as often seen in the family of Blues.

The nominal species L. hippothoë hippothoë is reported from northern Spain, central France, central, northern, and eastern Europe. Not reported from Portugal, Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, southern Italy, the Balkan, Greece.

Subspecies eurydame is smaller than the nominal species, and males are lacking the purple irisdescence. It can be met in the central and southern Alps of Austria, France, Switzerland, Italy, Appeninnes, at an elevation of 2000m - 2500m. Butterflies are on their wings in one extended generation in July and August.

Feeding plant of caterpillars: Rumex acetosa, Polygonum distorta.

at an elevation of 2250m above sealevel.

Guten Abend Peter,

Truly Fabulous!
To be able to capture the two together like this took a lot of patience!
Excellent colours, details and composition

What a fine pair of these Purple-edged Coppers, Peter!
Together with the purple flower, they make an eye-catching composition.
The details and colours on both the butterflies are outstanding.
Thanks and sorry for my delayed response to your kind words on my work.
Best regards.

Hi Peter

Wonderful macro of this lovely pair of butterflis.
It seems that even if it's nottoo warm, the sun shined nicely at that high altitude and gave you an excellent natural light to work with here. You took great advantage of it and managed - with an excellent DOF - to get both of them in such a nice focus.
The colors and details here are delightful and abbundant, giving interest to the photo. Very nice POV and lovely soft and pale BG, too.
Charming work!

Bravo and TFS

You are so good!!!
This is an amazing shot...wonderful colors and the lighting couldn't be better.
I have to add this to my favorites! :)

excelent macro photo, and color and all composition

Hi, dear Peter.
I am impressed again and again with quality of reproduction of all tiny details and features of the pictured subject. I cannot rich this level with any my lens. Choice of subject and POV is great as always. DOF is fantastic as well as the wonderful light and colours. You have shared tremendous shot of scenery where you have found these beauties. What a lovely place and perfect landscape picture. MY warm greetings and thanks for pleasure.
Yours Alexei.

Lieber Peter,
