[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is one of my favourite butterflies. I posted a shot of one a few months back which was the first time I'd seen one. I used to think it was huge (which it sort of is) until I saw some of the massive butterflies at the London Butterfly House where I took this. It's hard for me to believe that there are actually larger butterflies than the ones I saw! The Queen Alexandra's Birdwing for example, has a wing-span of over 1 foot!!

The Menelaus Blue Morpho (Morpho menelaus) is an iridescent tropical butterfly of Central and South America. It has a wing span of 6 inches (15 centimeters). The adult drinks juice from rotten fruit with its long proboscis, which is like a sucking tube. The adult males have brighter colors than the females.

The larva eat plants at night. The larva is red-brown in color with bright patches of lime-green or yellow. The larvae are also highly cannibalistic.

Thanks for looking :)

Hi Joe

A great shot - nice pose and great detail. The lighting and colours are both wonderful.

I have seen Morphos in the S American rainforest - an amazing sight as they come fluttering past - the blue comes and goes as they open and close their wings - beautiful and distracting - maybe a defence mechanism? I have also been lucky enough to see Raja Brookes Birdwing in Malaysian Borneo - a large and beautiful butterfly.

Regarding the points - do you remember if they were there when I marked the post? I marked a lot yesterday as I had very little time, but I do not want to go back and write crits if the points are going to disappear.

James

What a colorful and a beautiful species you have captured. I like the combination of its colors.

Nice one Joe,
this one is excellent, i think i might have one similar. Love the colour and striking markings shown so well here, you even caught the fine hairs on the leaves. That lens of yours gets some great results. It's just a shame to think this great place is closing down next week :o(

Hi Joe,
The picture of the butterfly is sharp and representative with good colours. Note is really informative. I never knew that there are butterflies as large as 1 foot wing-span. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Joe

No wonder this is one of your favorite butterfly species...it's absolutely stunning!
I really like your POV here and the excellent angle it gave you for those impressive colors and pattern on its wings.
Also the composition here is wonderful and very natural and thanks to your very good DOF choice, the BG is nicely blurred, too.
Sharp and colorful, but a bit too dark maybe...perhaps you were rather far and your flash wasn't powerful wenough...
Anyway, nice work pal!

Bravo and TFS

I can understand that this is one of your favorite specie, what a beauty this is! Patterns and colors are beautiful, this frame is a little tight to my taste as I would have tried to let a little more space in front of the butterfly but those wings are impressive and so beautiful! Well done!

What a delightful butterfly and absolute feast to the eye shot. This is really a gorgeous image with lots of detail to appreciate. This butterfly is formed perfectly and the colours are spectacular, especially at the lower part of the wings. It looks hand painted with gloss enamel. Good framing, good lighting and great clarity applied. A splendid macro presentation. Thanks for sharing, and have an enjoyable day.
