Here is a very cute Snowshoe Hare photographied at the Green Belt near Kanata, Ontatio (Quebec) last June... I should have used of some ruse in in order to have it at a perfect distance... In fact I stay in place until he jumped near me... My first picture of this great Leporidae...

Any comments?

Thank you!

Cool facts

This animal:

- can advance up to 3 m in one bound and travel as fast as 45 km an hour
- has up to four litters of young each year
- can reach great numbers—as many as 500 or 600 per square kilometre
- lives in every province and territory in Canada

The spectacular cyclic fluctuations of snowshoe hare populations are well known. These remarkably regular fluctuations, which are about 10 years long, can be traced back over 200 years in the fur records of the Hudson’s Bay Company. At the population peak, hares can be extremely abundant, reaching densities of 500 to 600 hares per square kilometre. Population peaks occur roughly at about the same time, throughout the snowshoe hare’s range, although the timing of peaks may vary by one to three years between regions. Population declines are largely caused by predation.

Dear Michel
Congratulations on your first attempt to photograph this Snowshoe Hare. You could not have done it better. I showed the photo to my granddaughter Maryke, and she just loved it, and also think it is very cute. Your patience in waiting for the right time was awarded with an excellent photo. I also enjoyed reading the notes. Thanks for sharing.
Warmest regards

Hi Michel

What a charming photo! It's not everyday a hare jumps as close to us and it's not everyday we see such a terrific shot of it here on TN! You took perfect advantage of the situation! Congratulations!
I really love the pose you've captured it here - with his cute nose in the are and smelling the nice atmosphere given by those little beautiful yellow flowers and tall grass - which you've so nicely integrated in the composition.
The shallow DOF that you used here is impeccable and isolates him so well from the other elements in the frame, especially the BG. Also, that great DOF and excellent focus provided exceptional sharpness on his entire body and head.
Truely remarkable work!

The focus is sharp with wonderful details.
The colours are natural and well saturated.
The textures in the fur are super with exceptional eye contact and detail.
The composition is beautiful, with the diagonal flow of the hare's body ,and the buttercups make a fantastic accent.
Great job.

Adrable ton petit lièvre! La pose est parfaite et le décor idéal. Il y en a qui ont de la chance. Tout est parfait dans cette imge. Elle pourrait être utilisée pour une Pub de lapins de Pâques!
Merci et bonne journée

Amazing shot with great details and colors. I like a lot the way you captured the animal smelling yellow flowers. Great job. By the way, are you happy with your FZ20? People say it's too noisy, what do you think?
Best regards,

Hello Michel,
oh, what a wonderful, charming meeting! Very clear, perfectly focussed with a shallow depth of field that concentrates all the attention to the rabbits nose, eyes, years, and he buttercups it seems to be nosing at. Artistically perfectly well balanced composition. Excellent image, makes me looking forward to Spring and Easter Holidays right now in November. Thank you! With best regards,

Hi Michel
So cute, wonderful. Superb exposure, colour, sharpness and detail. I love the use of the buttercup flowers around him, nice bright bit of colour.
Wonderful image

bonjour michel
cette photo est magnifique, techniquement et j'adore l'attitude du lapin,on dirait qu'il sent les fleurs.

Hi Michel,
A real cute one this one.A clever composition having captured it with the flowers and therefore giving an even softer interpretation. The details are very good and the plane of focus just right.Very natural and with well balanced light.
Regards, David
