Egyptian Vulture (Juvenile)
Neophron percnopterus
TR: Kucuk Akbaba

Egyptian vultures are summer visitors of Turkey, and they also breed here. It winters in Africa and India.
The image is taken from the hills of the garbage dump in Beypazari.

The Egyptian Vulture, (Neophron percnopterus) also known as Scavenger Vulture is a small Old World vulture, found from N. Africa to South west Asia. It is the only member of the genus Neophron.

The adult's plumage is black and white. Its facial skin is yellow (it turns orange during nesting periods) and devoid of feathers. The tail is diamond shaped, so it is easily distinguished in flight. The nestlings are dark brown and gradually become light by adulthood at the age of 5.

The adult Egyptian Vulture usually measures 85 cm from the point of the beak to the extremity of the tail and 1.7m between the tips of the wings. It weighs about 2.1 kilograms.

Egyptian Vultures are quite widely distributed and can be found in South Europe, N. Africa, West and South Asia. They are partial migrants, depending on the local climate. If the Egyptian Vulture can endure the local winter it will usually not migrate. It is not well adjusted to cold weather conditions, mainly because of its surface area-volume ratio that causes a quick loss of heat.

Egyptian Vultures are scavengers, mainly feeding off carrion, but they also prey on small mammals and eggs.

*Egyptian Vultures are now one of five vulture species listed as Endangered in the 2007 IUCN Red List update

Hello Selen,
I like the POV and composition of this in-flight capture of a juvenile Egyptian Vulture. The sharpness, details and colours together with the exposure of both the blue sky BG are also excellent. The head shows well against the dark juvenile plumage.

Hi Selen

Another fascinating capture from you!
This is truely an amazing in-flight of this juvenile Egyptian Vulture, caught in a terrific pose, with its wings nicely stretched and his head in such a great patch of sunlight.
The contrast and composition thus created is simply brilliant and put out all the great features of this amazing vulture, presented here so well and so sharp.
Also, i thinkg that the photo is very well balanced exposure-wise, with very nice textures visible on the underside of the bird. I think that the amoung of light here is just right - as it should be and as it is natural for us to see it - and therefore the original is better than he workshop.
Wonderful work!

Bravo and TFS

Great shot Selen, looks very similar in its pose to the wedge-tailed eagle I posted a few weeks ago.
Great sharpness and good POV, great eye contact.
Well done

Hello Selen,

Thank you very much for having challenge the smell of the dump in order to let us see that wonderful capture of this vulture!

The focus on the head is impressive and you chose excellently the aperture speed (1/2000s) in order to get it!

Nice exposition also: not easy to see the different black/brown tones without burning the white on the head!

Great job and TFS!
