I'm amazed at how many butterflies are still hovering around my place. It's already the middle of November and we've had two minor freezes. Of course, today's weather is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit (almost 27 degrees Celsius).
I feel sure this is a male based on other photos I took where scent glands seem to be evident on the lower wings.

Attributes of Danaus gilippus

Family: Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae)

Subfamily: Milkweed Butterflies (Danainae)

Identification: Upperside is chestnut brown; black borders of forewings have 2 rows of white spots; white spots are scattered at the forewing apex. Underside of hindwing has black veins; black borders of both wings have 2 rows of white spots. Upperside of male hindwing has a black scale patch. Very similar to the Soldier (Danaus eresimus), but is more brown and has less defined wing veins on the upperside. Underside hindwing lacks band of pale spots present in the Soldier. Queens in the southwest (and sometimes in the southeast) have pale veins on the upperside of the hindwings, which are lacking in the Soldier.

Life history: To find females, males patrol all day. Females lay eggs singly on leaves, stems, and flower buds; which the caterpillars eat. Adults roost communally.

Flight: All year in Florida and South Texas, July-August in the north.

Wing span: 2 5/8 - 3 7/8 inches (6.7 - 9.8 cm).

Caterpillar hosts: Milkweeds and milkweed vines. Some of the milkweeds contain cardiac glycosides which are stored in the bodies of both the caterpillar and adult. These poisons are distasteful and emetic to birds and other vertebrate predators. After tasting a Queen, a predator might associate the bright warning colors of the adult or caterpillar with an unpleasant meal, and avoid Queens in the future.

Adult food: Nectar from flowers including milkweeds, fogfruit, and shepherd's needle.

Habitat: Open, sunny areas including fields, deserts, roadsides, pastures, dunes, washes, and waterways.

Hello Angelina,

I really like the butterfly's 'V' shaped pose that you have captured here! It allows us to view the upper and under sides of the wings!
Lovely colours, detail and composition!

It has been such an unusual year for nature, just keep looking, you may see even more butterflies yet!

Best wishes,
Bev :-)

Wow! This is beautiful - more like a painting than a photo. It has an Oriental flavor with the delicate flowers. The butterfly is marvlous in a wonderful position. Beautiful colors and sharp details. A great shot!

Hello Angelina, what a nice name to make a photo like that! Photographing angels. This is a very nice shot of a butterfly, it is very aerial, we feel the element of the butterfly is air, flying through those nice and aerial flowers just like a dance. TFS,

Even on this laptop your photo is incredible looking. Little flowers and DOF in the sunlight are highlighted so well.I rate this top notch, but can't wait to get home to see it on my PC.

I always love your butterfly shots. The contrasting colors, how well they blend in with nature, and the small details that may seem insignificent. This is a terrific close-up of this feel. The DOF is perfect and as always, I'm left amazed. Excellent, just excellent.

Angelina,
This one is gorgeous.
We too have butterflies in Calgary, you know. Ha, ha.
Watch the next post and surprise yourself.
This one looks like a monach or is it really "The Queen".???
Keep them coming, girl, while you can.
Warm & friendly regards to you and your hubby,
Mario from the COLD.

Hi Angelina. Exelent shot of this "Monarca" They are still pasing by my town too in they way to south Mexico to invernate in "Michacan" I like them a lot. The other day I went to a park here and they were a lot of children seated arround a profesor who teach them about the Monarca buterflys, they all were paying attention in what she said. Luis52.

Hi Angelina,
even though butterflies look delicate they really aren't.I have seen them on days flying when it was snowing and when the air temperature was near freezing. They are sure aggressive as well as I have been "attacked" by them in a vain effort to drive me off but of course they are no threat. So even with the cold you have had it is nice to see you still have them around. This is a lovely looking capture with good colour, focus and detail.I like the airiness of light you have captured. Thanks for giving us this view. Bob

Hi Angelina.
Superb image all over with a perfect DOF. Beautiful light, sharpness and detail. The colours and dainty flowers set the stage perfectly for him.

Hi Angelina.
I have missed this charming picture of a beautiful butterfly at so nice surroundings. Amazing POV and coloration of the butterfly. Terrific airiness of the BG and its smoothen and colours. Bravo. Very nice refined art work.

Angelina,

Beautiful capture you're presenting here. There is a lot of delicateness in this image, the colours are great and you got the whole butterfly in focus. Congratulations!

Lise

Nice shot. The simple bg with the butterfly in the foreground looks wonderful. The light coming thru the transclucent wings look great. Good composition too.
