Identification Tips:
Length: 12 inches Wingspan: 25 inches
Fairly large, duck-like waterbird with short wings and a short tail
Very short, thick bill
Frequently seen both swimming and walking
Often flicks and cocks short tail while walking, exposing white outer undertail coverts
Sexes similar
Toes have lobed webbing, unlike gallinules
Adult:

White bill with dark reddish ring just before tip
White frontal shield with reddish oval near tip
Slate gray head, neck, back, upperwings, breast and belly
Juvenile:

Lacks the frontal shield of the adult
Horn-colored bill may lack ring near tip
Pale gray-brown head, neck, upperwings, breast and back; feathers on underparts often with paler edges
Similar species:
Common Moorhen is of similar size and shape but has a reddish bill with a yellowish tip, a white stripe along the flanks, and a brownish back.

Hi Adam,
this is an amazingly well detailed shot of this coot certainly one of the best I have ever seen.One week ago I purchased the same camera that you have used for this remarkable photo and if this is any indication I think that my shots will improve markedly all things being equal that is.Fine detail,colour and focus make this coot come alive in a way I have never seen before now.Best of all is the focus is on the bird"s head giving the definitive view of this fascinating creature face.Thanks for sharing this coot with us all. Hi Adam, great close up of this Coot. This Coot is far more attractive than ours here in the UK. I like the colouring on the beak and the pin sharp eye. Very well exposed on both whites and blacks. Great light on the water drops. Great pov and dof. A very nice composition all round.

Perfect exposure that has revealed excellent sharp detail in the black head plumage Adam.
