Just touching base in California. I took this shot a few days ago. This was a large pile of juveniles - they were very quiet - but suddenly one wanted out!

The Northern Elephant Seal lives in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, migrating as far north as Alaska and the shores of California and Baja California, where they come ashore to breed, give birth and molt, mostly on offshore islands. While the pelagic range covers an enormous span, there are only about seven principal breeding areas, four of which are on islands off the coast of California. There are two places on the California coast where colonies can be legally observed, Aņo Nuevo State Park and Piedras Blancas (near San Simeon), by the thousands. Recently increasing numbers have been observed in the Gulf of California

Hiya James, what a wonderful shot, really like the natural colours and sharpness, but the composition is superb, a wheel of seal blubber protecting the juvenile, excellent capture!

Hi James.
Fantastic, well seen. Sleeping blubber not beauty is it? Great composition with them all circled around the little fella on his way out of there. Great sharpness, exposure and detail.

Hi James,
I like the frame filling composition a lot. Its something I like to do myself as well, but I never came across the opportunity to fill the frame with seals.
The way they all seem to stick there head together gives the photo a very unique effect. The one guy trying to leave the center adds a bit of a funny touch.

Niek

Wow, this is a most unusual shot James! Your portfolio is wonderful. Smashing shot with the central Seal having enough of it. Apart from good light, good exposure, great detail and sharpness, this shot is very creative, could be termed as abstract with those wonerful curves and lines with tones winding through the shot. I love it.
:) later

Oh yes James we did have many of them near the input for fishing vessels in Mendocino county. As the deep sea trawlers came, they frequently dropped old bait as they neared shore. This created a swarming of seals following the boats in and hen lounging at the harbour. Your sense of humor here with tile is right one. I can relate to that myself with my wife and I having 7 children..at one time all gone now...A very humorous image.
Bob
