Description
Cassowaries are large, flightless birds that are related to emus and found only in Australia and New Guinea. The southern cassowary has glossy black plumage and a bright blue neck, with red colouring at the nape. Two wattles of bare, red coloured skin hang down from the throat. Cassowaries have stout, powerful legs and long feet with 3 toes; the inner toe on each foot has a sharp claw that can reach up to 80 mm in length. The name cassowary comes from a Papuan name meaning ‘horned head’, referring to the helmet of tough skin born on the crown of the head. This helmet (or casque) slopes backwards and is used to push through vegetation as the cassowary runs through the rainforest with its head down; it also reflects age and dominance. The sexes are similar in appearance although females tend to be larger and heavier. Chicks are striped black and cream; fading to brown after around 5 months. The adult colouring and casque begin to develop between 2 and 4 years of age.
Range
The southern cassowary is found in New Guinea and as well as Queensland in northeastern Australia.
Habitat
These birds are rainforest inhabitants, although they are also found in nearby savanna, mangroves and fruit plantations.

Biology
Cassowaries are usually solitary individuals, and males are subordinate to females if they meet. Females may lay several clutches of eggs during the breeding season that runs from June to October. These are laid directly onto the forest floor and the male than takes sole responsibility for their care. The male incubates the eggs for around 50 days, turning the eggs and only leaving his charges in order to drink. He cares for his offspring for up to 16 months, protecting them under his tail if threatened.

Cassowaries fight by kicking out with their legs, they have a fearsome reputation but their diet is composed almost entirely of fruit. These birds are important dispersers of a number of rainforest seeds, ranging far in search of fruiting trees.

Scary bird, looks like visitor from deep past. I watched interesting program about Cassowaries last sunday on Discovery. Impressive birds - very aggresive, brave and could kill even human! You portraited it superbly Sebnem. Great POV and details, fantastic colours.

Quelle tête ! impressionnant... j'ai entendu quelque part que les oiseau descendaient des dinosaures, on a pas de peine à le croire quand on voit celui ci !

Amicalement,

Vincent

Very good clear shot Sebnem. The different colours are just like a raindow. Very well captured. Thanks.

Great capture of a very interesting bird Sebnem.

The colours are very nice, the dof is spot on as and the composition is good but I would like a little more space in front of the bird. I really like his attitude and the look with the big horn in the forehead.

Very good note as always.

Details are stunning supported with vibrant colours. Very nice capture Sebnem. BG gives a 3D effect to your photo. I would personally prefer a vertical composition though, but this is only a personal taste. TFS.

What a superb capture Sebnem, the colour, detail and back up with a very informative note, great post and very well done.

Very good portrait Sebnem.
Never seen this before, is it real ? ;-)
Good details, colours and POV.
Very well done.

Now Instanbul is the last place I would have gone looking for a cassawary Sebnem, so I presume it was in a zoo?

These guys are unreal to find in the wild, though you have to be careful when they have young or are hungry as the do attack people and can easily rip your guts out with their large and powerful feet.

Great portrait, their horns are all different and often bent to one side.

I saw a cassowary in the wild in northern Queensland a few years ago and only managed a very dark, blurred shot. This, on the other hand, is a superb example. I love the way yuou can see the individual hairs (feathers?) on it's neck. Simple, effective and very striking. Thank you for sharing this.

I like the unusual combination of red and white. Also sharpness and brightness are just right. Although it is a very colorful bird the compostion is natural!!
Well done.

Hi Sebnem
I had to come back to this cassowary - he is delightfull and I love his casque and blue face - No nits on the quality. personally, I would add a bit of space in front of the bill and on top of the casque, but this is personal taste - a splendid picture, TFS

Hi Sebnem,
The first time I ever saw a cassowary was at the Seoul Zoo in 1975. Quite an amazing bird! I think I have an old slide of the one I saw somewhere... It looks very similar if I remember correctly, although I know yours is a much better closeup!
That was (the mid seventies) a very nice time in my life. The only thing that could have made it better back then was if they had mountain bikes back then...
Thanks for stirring the old memory juices!
Best Regards,
Dave
