At a reserve just outside Greymouth the other day I found two species of native Greenhood Orchids growing in close proximity to each other.
One I readily identified as Pterostylis banksii which I have posted pictures of several times.
The other was much smaller with shorter tepals and finer detail.
I wrote to my friend Eric Scanlen of the New Zealand Native Orchid Group who informed me that this is Pterostylis irsoniana and is distinguished by the little backward facing scoop at the tip of the labellum (not visible in this shot).
Bruce Irwin and Owen Gibson discovered it on Mt Egmont and irsoniana is a combination and Latinisation of their surnames.
Greenhood Orchids are out in full force at this time of year, and the epiphytic orchids will soon be flowering too.
Hope you like the shot.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Steve, Yeap I do like the shot, beautiful lighting, good detail and well framed, nice work, Cheers Rick :)
it is simply very nice macro shot. Beautiful contrast between dark BG and green plant. Nicely composed. Great focus and good notes.

I really like this technique of lighting with the dark BG.Very nice contrast.
The warm light illuminates the subject well and the colours are vivid.
The subtle variegated pattern shows well.
Nicely composed in the frame.
Very good POV and DOF
I guess your Summer is getting into full swing now.

So, you've posted picture from rain forest? Very naughty move my friend! We've got snow and frost and unfortunatelly I can't stay all day with my playstation, because I must go to work! S**t!!!
Orchid looks beautifull, escpecially with this kind of fragile composition, light and dark BG. Really nice picture!
