[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have tried to photograph these birds many times, they are very secretive and difficult to see. If you catch sight of them they move very quickly. In Autumn they gather nuts and here I had the rare opportunity of seeing one right infront of me. It is not the best shot to show off its wonderful plumage and also my dof could have been better, but at least I managed it! Thanks for all of your comments.

Garrulus glandarius

Crows and allies (Corvidae)

Although they are the most colourful members of the crow family, jays are actually quite difficult to see. They are shy woodland birds, rarely moving far from cover. The screaming call usually lets you know a jay is about and it is usually given when a bird is on the move, so watch for a bird flying between the trees with its distinctive flash of white on the rump. Jays are famous for their acorn feeding habits and in the autumn you may see them burying acorns for retrieving later in the winter.
Found across most of the UK, except northern Scotland. Lives in both deciduous and coniferous woodland, parks and mature gardens. Likes oak trees in autumn when there are plenty of acorns. Often seen flying across a woodland glade giving its screeching call, it becomes more obvious in autumn when it may fly some distance in the open in search of acorns.

When to see them
All year round, but often more obvious in autumn when they travel most in search of acorns, beech mast and hazelnuts to bury. They also eat seeds and insects.

Hi Deborah

Wonderful composition with a great low POV.The isolation from the BG is great and the detail in the plumage is excellent (on my screen at least). I think you have shown the pluage off to great advantage.

Hi Deborah
Nice cpature and great details on the bird..
I like the colors and the POV you got here..
well done.

Hello Deborah,
this is a great shot of a Jay!
Much better than I have managed: a tiny speck in the frame :)
+++ As James said the low-down eye-level POV is very effective.
The DOF is pretty good and blurs the BG well.
Bright colours and good lighting... the blue wing feathers stand out well but I think they could be more vivid so I did a workshop... I hope you don't mind!
--- Nothing, other than the slightly dull blue feathers :)
Well done,

Hello Deborah, what a beautiful and colourful bird that you captured. The depth of field is precise, it is very sharp and I like the small movement of the legs, giving movement. Thank you!

Hi Debz

This is a really lovely image. I love the low POV and the direct eye contact. Lovely light and beautiful colours. Nicely sharp as well.

Original PoV.
Bellos colores y fabulosa nitidez.
Genial presentación.
Un saludo, JL.

Hi Deb,
I've found my jays here to be quite shy & cautious as well. Far fewer opportunities to get a shot than many other birds..
Excellent detail, color, DOF, and you managed the ambient light well with great exposure.
I like this POV, with the bird looking at you too :)
Probably a bit less space right would be better IMHO.
Nice work,

Hello Deborah,
One of my favourite birds very well captured.
I like the POV and details and colours are very fine! Beautiful light and lovely colours. Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

I think your depth of field is quite good considering the focal length. The foreground and the bird are very sharp. Color looks natural and the exposure is perfect. I like the eye contact.
