A Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) entering a Gladiolus flower in the garden. There were many of these going in and out so I just sat and waited for one to hover inside the flower.
There are 270 species of Hoverfly in the United Kingdom, the Marmalade Hoverfly is the most common.
Its numbers are boosted by migrants arriving from the continent, sometimes in dense swarms.
Infact they made the news last month when a swarm of millions arrived on the coast of Essex, carried there by warm thermals from the continent.
They caused havoc on beaches and seafronts where children and families had mistaken there black and yellow colouring for wasps.
Children were screaming, people were covering up prams and pushchairs.People who stood still for a moment were covered in them.
The Hoverfly is totally harmless and has no sting, its colours are designed to deter predators and fool most humans too!
Its a very important pollinator of flowers and its larvae eat aphids.

I would probably have made the same mistake is the people that saw the swarm and then go out to buy a lottery ticket because I was luck enough to not to get stung! This is a very clear capture with excellent DOF and detail

Andy, the flowers fits the frame well and give a pleasing background to the hoverfly. Your details are sharp and this is a great catch you made. Thanx for sharing.

I like of this extraordinarily colours Andy, also soft, almost a water painting, nice note too.

The level of this site is becoming very high indeed with photos like this, thanks for sharing.

Hanging like a helicopter, wonderful captured, I think you waited long for this...but it's a great one, Andy !

Very nice and colorful catch, Andy, of the hoverfly busy, ehm, hovering. The motion blur in the wings is just about right to suggest movement and at the same time still render some detail. The blossom makes a wonderful background. Well done.

Great shot Andy catching he movement just right.

This is extremely good with the speed of 200. I like the way to managed to capture the hoverfly just as it was entering the flower. Very well done, Andy.
