[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Abalones are generally colorful and quite big shells, but the Mediterranean and Aegean littoral zones are not so lucky regarding their Haliotis fauna. Only two species are generally found and they are relatively small and insignificant. The one shown here is a brittle mature H. lamellosa shell, its long axis nearly 4.5 cms and the mother-of-pearl coating of the inside is quite thin, lightly iridescent and lacks a muscle scar. A few openings of the frontally situated gills could be seen at the upper-right side of the shell. The shell was collected from the rocky offshore of Azmak Beach, Ovacık - Çeşme/İzmir at a depth of 3 meters. To demonstrate the slight iridescence of the inner coating, a truncated tracing-paper cone was placed over the shell as an effective diffuser, which was lighted with a single photoflood placed a meter to the bottom-right side and photographed over a dark-blue BG 20 cms below the shell.

Deniz Kulakları genelde renkli ve oldukça büyük kavkılardır, ama Akdeniz ve Ege'nin littoral bölgeleri Haliotis faunaları açısından çok şanslı değildir. Genelde sadece iki türe rastlanır ve bunlar nispeten küçük ve önemsizdirler. Burada gösterilen kırılgan bir ergin H. lamellosa kavkısı, uzun ekseni 4.5 cm kadar ve içinin sedef kaplaması çok ince, hafifçe parıltılı ve bir kas izi taşımıyor. Önde bulunan solungaçlara ait birkaç açıklık kavkının sağ-üst tarafında görülebiliyor. Bu kavkı, Ovacık'ın (Çeşme/İzmir) Azmak Plajı açıklarında 3 m derinlikteki kayalık zeminden temin edildi. İç kaplamasının hafif parıltılarını saptayabilmek için aydinger kağıdından kesik bir koni etkili bir dağıtıcı işlevi görecek şekilde kavkının üzerine yerleştirilip sağ-alt tarafından, 1 m uzaklıktaki bir fotoğraf lambasıyla aydınlatıldı ve çekim esnasında kavkının 20 cm altına koyu mavi bir fon konuldu.

Photographing a shell, and that too a delicate one like this, requires expertise which you have described well in your note and exhibited strongly in this wonderful picture, Mehmet.
I guess this is a rare specimen and is so beautiful.
The three dimesionality of the shell is also well recorded in this shot.

Hello Mehmet,
Another interesting Abalone shell in beautiful colours. I'm surprised they exist in the Mediterranean at all! This is very well captured. I wonder how you display these apart from on the screen. Do you have storage chests with boxes where they're layed out or?
