Yellow-banded Acraea / Hyalites cabira

I really admire all the talented butterfly photographers on the site. I now realise that it is not so easy to photograph these kaleidoscopic insects, as they have way too much energy and just won't sit still for a moment. Sometimes I cannot help to grin at myself. Since I started this photographic hobby I got myself into some weird situations. I am sure if the neighbours could see me, they'd surely think I completely lost my marbles. In my attempt to try and capture some of the butterflies in our garden, I'd sneak up behind them, trying to hide away from them hoping they won't see me, run after them or following them, sometimes having to find something to stand on (because I'm a shorty) so that I could reach them and finally get a shot.

At last, when luck is on my side and I manage to shoot one, it would normally be with closed wings. Obviously a butterfly looks much more spectacular with open wings so one can admire and appreciate all its gorgeous beauty however, when I laid eyes upon this "Yellow-banded Acraea" I found that sometimes it could be just as beautiful with closed wings.

Admiring the gorgeous and vibrant wings of this specific butterfly transported my memories way back to my childhood days when we used to go and see the Saturday afternoon matinees showing that old time Cowboy and Indians movies. It was such nail biting adventures. Sitting on the edge of your chair you where normally rather panicky after the "beautiful girl" in the story was kidnapped by some unpleasant Apache and his group of thugs. You totally forgot all about the popcorn in your hand. Then the shaman would order one of his tribe members, in a Native American language, to scalp the poor hero, who was captured after he came to rescue the damsel in distress. I remember peeping through my fingers when the wigwams were burnt down if a family member died inside.

I am sure that by this time you must be wondering what the connection might be between these old Western movies and this posting of the butterfly. It all has to do with the Apache chief finally appearing on the horizon, on his magnificent stallion, all dressed up in his traditional costume, his face and body uniquely painted, and off course the vibrant headgear full of magnificent and striking colours and patterns. What an impression it has made on me as a youngster, and I vividly remember how I always wondered where they got all the feathers for that headgear.

The resemblance between the chief's headgear and the Yellow-banded Acraea was so apparent to me that I decided to call this photo "Butterfly for the chief". I am sure you will agree with me that this is a spectacular butterfly with a wonderful arrangement of colours and patterns.

This scarce butterfly is another Trek Nature first and trying to find some Internet information on it was about as difficult as to find a needle in a haystack (probably because there was no needle to start with). It was the same as with my posting of "The Spider hunting wasp". We could only find checklists of butterflies which included this species, but no notes about it at all. Never the less, what I can tell you about this Yellow-banded Acraea is the following
:

Phylum: Arthropoda (insects, arachnids, and crustaceans)
Class: Insecta (insects)
Order: Lepidoptera (butterflies & moths)
Superfamily: Paplionoidea ('true' butterflies)
Family: Nymphalidae (brush-footed butterflies)
Subfamily: Heliconiinae (long wing butterflies)
Until recently, regarded as a purely New Wold subfamily of the Nymphalidae. Now includes all species that once comprised Acraeinae with some that were in Nymphalidae. The genera in this subfamily have been subject to three major taxonomic rearrangements in the last 20 years.

Genus: Hyalites
Although the common name of this butterfly is Yellow-banded "Acraea" it is sometimes erroneously placed in the genus Acraea. However, the correct genus is Hyalites (bitter Acraea) which is a relative and very similar to the butterflies belonging to the Acraea genus.
Species: cabira

Wingspan: Male: 38-44mm. Female: 40-45mm.

Identification: Sexes are very similar. Male's colours are slightly deeper than that of the female. Common in thick bush and forest. Fluttering flight low and slow, often visiting flowers.

Distribution: May be locally common, but usually quite scarce. From Eastern Cape to Kwa-Zulu Natal; throughout Drakensberg forests in Mpumalanga and Limpopo Province.

Habitat: Forest edges.

Flight period: Year-round more common in the warmer months.

Taken from the book: Field Guide to Butterflies of South Africa - Steve Woodhall, Published by Struik Publishers.

I hope you enjoy looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
Wow, what a gorgeous butterfly with beautiful markings and lovely colours on the underside of its wings. Excellent capture showing us this rarely seen species! I like its pose here and it stands out very nicely from the green background.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Anna

The Sony has done a great job in capturing this species new to me. Well saturated colours and a vibrant underwing pattern. I'm pleased to see your enjoying new hobby and don't worry about the neighbours, they're the one's missing out on all the fun.

Chris

Hi Anna,
A very interesting subject and a great set of notes. I thought mine were getting a bit long sometimes, but you have surpassed yourself here. The details are excellent and the colours of the butterfly are cool and varied, but I see them as being a bit muted by the bright greens of the background. So I've played a bit in Photoshop and muted greens a bit. See what you think. Thanks.

Hi Anna,
I enjoyed reading your notes about the Chief :)
The colours on this butterfly are indeed very beautiful.
What amazes me the most is its eye! Blue with black spots! I wonder why it evolved to have such an eye.
Great frame-filling composition and superb POV.
The DOF is really good and blurs the BG perfectly.
Excellent work!
Well done,
Joe

it's a pleasant shot Anna,
It s a good capture, I have never seen this butterfly for real, look me nice to photograph him or her, good photojob, say greeting to you husband. have a nice day

Your first butterfly and what a beauty. I like the details captured here just like all your previous posts. The colors and contrast are very well managed with good exposure of the shot.

I am actually looking forward to your new post and you can be sure that I'll be coming back.

Hi Anna.
What a beauty you managed to catch. Amazing specimen and so impressive POV. I am impressed with quality of texture and colour reproduction. Pose of the butterfly, framing and composition of the image are superb. I welcome minimal aperture value. Some blurriness of the BG is better than sharp one. Well done and TFS.

Dear Anna
Beginners luck? No experience? Pure luck shots?
I’d be inclined to disagree. Looking at this splendid photo of this Yellow-banded butterfly I cannot imagine that you are only a novice. But on the other hand a beginner needs a coach and instructor and where would you find the most suitable one as right by your side? My friend Loot has trained you well and I think your persistency have paid off well. Stunning photo indeed. I can imagine seeing this shorty standing on a structure of some kind to take a photo. That sounds very funny but cute indeed. You have excelled yourself as a student. Well done!
Warmest regards
Aaltjie

Hi Mrs. Eksteen,
First of all Hope Mr. Loot is good in health. I read about the Heart attack incidence in his 2nd anniv. post here on TN. Please do take care of him. A beautiful capture of this yellow branded acraea. It has some similarities with one of the common butterfly found here named tawny coaster. Nice composition and very good details. Good informative notes. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Very nicely done Anna! It certainly has some colour to it...very attractive colours at that. I see that you shall be giving serious challenge to your husband eh? I wish my SO would take pictures, but she protests...ah well...a super image..

Hi Anna, you're lucky to have these butterflies flying by.

And I too can remember the Saturday afternoon old time Cowboy and Indians movies we used to go and see when the Indian chief sat on his horse, so regal and stately. But why were they always the baddies???

Your beauty here is very stately and regal is his colours and patterns too. Such striking colours. . . and well captured too,
Thank you for sharing him and your story too,

Hello Anna

Groete

Hello Anna,
I like the composition with the dynamic diagonal pose!
The wing pattern is well reproduced, and I notice the fine texture in the wing that makes the insect look very natural in the image...
Attractive rich colours make my pleasant experience complete!

this species is really very beautiful, i liked the pov, composition and the beautiful colours,

Bold color, nice detail and POV Anna. I like the composition.
I think the "chase" as you describe it in your notes, is the one thing I like the most about macro. One becomes a "hunter" in many respects, stalking the prey..I think it's the "hunter/gatherer" thing :)
Well done,
Howard

Vibrant color defines this beautiful shot, Anna. I like the dynamic range of it, as well as the great sharpness, crisp texture and enough fine detail to see the "hair" on the leaves. Good close-up work and nice diagonal composition on the stem. Great note, too.

Hello Anna,
Don't worry; I guess that most of us look very weird for the neighbors... When I go out to take birds pictures one my cats always follows me like a little dog. People use to go in their window to see this strange parade of my cat, me and my monopod with the 100-400 zoom, flash and flash extender, lol!

This is a superb specie and I think that I have never seen it before. Its colors are amazing. You caught it in good composition and exposure in lovely natural environment. IMHO it needs a little USM that was nicely done in WS. I would be much impressed to see this creature in real :) Well done and TFS those interesting notes and picture,

Hello Anna (a.k.a. Miss Piggy),
Allow me to welcome you on TN 23 days after you joined it.
It was just a coincidence that while looking at Loot's recent picture of that heavenly morning, I saw your critique and clicked on your TN name of "Miss Piggy" on an impulse.
And lo and behold, you turn out to be Anna whom I was familiar with through my very dearest friend Loot's occasional mention of your name in his intensive notes and critiques on TN.
~
I have now read your introductory profile with immense interest and just can't be diplomatic in saying that you are a better photographer than Loot ("Chuckle" -- to use his pet expression)!!
And where were you hiding all these days, "Miss Piggy"?
~
Your picture of this beautiful and rare butterfly is far from a novice's fumblings with the camera. It is a veritable work of art.
It it sharp, crisp, well composed, colourful and . . . well, it is just the kind of picture I would like to make some day.
You are also one ahead of Loot in writing very informative and interesting notes.
(I'm sure Loot would like to strangle me for runnning him down so much!)

So welcome to TN once again, Anna.
This community has turned richer by your presence.
Warm regards,
Ram Thakur

Hi Anna

The chief (complete with his extravagant head-gear) have come to town and visited our garden.

A spectacularly coloured butterfly and you nailed the details on this one. The composition is great with the insect and the grass blade placed on the diagonal. The colours are beautiful, the DOF was sufficient to remove most of the crisp details of the grass directly behind and in close proximity to the butterfly, the low angled POF gave excellent results, and the exposure was well managed.

Good work and TFS.

Hi Anna,
I found this jewel in your gallery...what wonderful rich colours and texture picked up off this butterfly...i love that blue patterned eye!

And returning back after a while to complete this critique i had a wonderful time reading your notes.I could see the little girl at the movies and the very scene from the movie:)You are a great family of writers too, do you realise Mrs. Eksteen?

Following butterflies, i think, has to be clasified into another "chasing" art form in wildlife photography.People like Pankaj(Bajpai), Peter(Stoeckl), Silivio, Gert(Passen) etc have perfected this art so well that they can become trainers:)

And now to talk again about your wonderful find and a TN first, it is this very vivid hues on it that attracted me towards it.The grey, the orange, marigold yellow, off-white and black.. all form a melage of colours and patterns on the beauty. However it is the most contrasting colour that i find in its eye ...the blue in it stands out very well..and attracts one's attention immediately.I am wondering how do they look had you had it open its wings.Every bit of detail on the butterfly is focussed well and with fantastic clarity.I like the way the rolled up probe and the antennaes are very clearly recorded.Despite the fact that you have a habitat here which is quite busy, your composition places the viewer's complete attention on the subject excellently.
Good use of light highlighting its colours in fine contrast.
Thank you for this wonderful capture.

Cheers

Hello Anna
I understand perfectly how it is to photograph insects or another animals that are sitting and moving when you are with your camera near. This is a very beautiful butterfly, even with closed wings.
